Consisting of many tiny granules made from steamed and dried whole-grain durum wheat, couscous has become a popular alternative to rice and pasta. Why should i get wholemeal cous cous it has a light, fluffy texture which is a little bland in flavour, but which readily soaks up the flavours of other ingredients. Couscous may also be used to make a breakfast tabbouleh salad. Though usually cooked in water, it can also be cooked in another liquid, like apple juice, and served with dried fruit and honey. A 1 cup serving of couscous provides only 176 calories, which is 8% of a standard 2,000 calorie diet. This is far less than the calories that a cup of rice or quinoa holds, which provide 205 and 254 calories per cup, respectively. Instructions for use: to cook: pour 1 cup couscous into boiling water, stir once with a spoon, cover with a lid, and remove from heat. Let the couscous steam for five minutes.
