The penfolds bin 138 was born in 1992, and is inspired by the wines of the southern rhone, where the grapes of shiraz, grenache and mataro mourvèdre are used in blends to create full-bodied wines with a rich aromatic profile. The grapes are grown and harvested from old vines in the barossa valley. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 12-15 months. On the nose, the wine reveals aromas of ripe red fruit, light balsamic notes, and herbaceous hints. The earthy elements of barossa and the sweet spices abound on the palate. The tannic backbone is perfectly balanced by juicy succulence and fresh acidity. It works very well with lamb and duck.
