Dating to circa 1860 1880, this exquisite antique victorian mosaic brooch features a magnificent micro mosaic artwork composed of hundreds of glass tesserae, painstakingly arranged to depict two white doves nestled amongst spring flowers against a celestial turquoise sky. The artwork is framed in a warm 15ct yellow gold navette gallery, adorned with scrolled wirework and beading which are classic etruscan revival design motifs. This piece was likely born of the grand tour, and the mosaic centrepiece may have been purchased in rome or venice as a high-status souvenir and brought back to britain to be set by a master jeweller. The motif of the doves is a classic victorian symbol of romantic love, devotion, and fidelity, suggesting this piece was originally commissioned as a deeply sentimental betrothal gift or a token of eternal affection.
