Semi was designed in 1968 as a product of the creative partnership between claus bonderup and torsten thorup. It was manufactured in response to the soft and organic shapes of the so-called cosy era that dominated the danish design landscape at the time. Bonderup and thorup both wanted to manufacture a lamp that offered clean, sharp lines and a geometric shape. Their design was entered into a competition at the royal danish academy of architecture, where it won first prize.
The pendant became hugely successful in the 1980s, becoming the best-selling danish design at one point. It even achieved international recognition that elevated its status to iconic.
