How do I estimate the right heat output in BTU/h for my door?

Start by noting door width and traffic. Smaller doors around 30 to 36 inches with steady but light use usually do well around the 3 kW class (about 10,236 BTU/h). Moderate doors or busier spots often benefit from roughly 15,354 to 20,472 BTU/h (the 4.5 to 6 kW classes). Large or high-traffic entrances often call for around 30,708 BTU/h (the 9 kW class). When uncertain, choose a slightly higher output for cold snaps and peak hours.

Where should an air curtain be mounted for best performance?

Mount it directly above the doorway, typically between 7 and 10 feet high, and angle the discharge slightly outward. Keep the intake and outlet clear of signage or decorations so the air stream remains continuous across the door width. For very wide openings or double doors, consider two units installed side by side to ensure full coverage.

What’s the difference between heated and unheated air curtains?

Unheated models focus purely on forming an air barrier to block drafts, dust, and insects. Heated units add warmth that customers and staff feel immediately at the threshold. Retail and hospitality sites often prefer heated options for comfort, while some industrial or mild-climate settings choose unheated models for energy efficiency and simple operation.

How often should I clean or service an air curtain?

Check the intake and outlet grilles at least quarterly in clean environments and monthly in dusty or high-traffic areas. Wipe down grilles, remove debris, and confirm brackets and controls are secure. A light, regular cleaning schedule prevents performance drop-offs and helps your air curtain maintain a strong, even air barrier.

Can one air curtain cover a very wide entrance?

It depends on the entrance. For standard single doors, a single appropriately sized unit is fine. For extra-wide or double doors, two units installed side by side often deliver better, more even coverage. The goal is a continuous, uninterrupted air stream across the full width of the opening.

Best Air Curtains for Busy UK Entrances: Compare Top Consort Claudgen, Dimplex, and Hyco Models

Why Air Curtains Matter for Business and Industrial Entrances

If your front door works as hard as your staff, you’re a prime candidate for an air curtain. Think of it like an invisible door: a fast-moving stream of air that keeps warm air in, cold drafts out, and dust, fumes, and insects where they belong—outside. From cafés and boutiques to warehouses and plant rooms, the right air curtain cuts energy loss, boosts comfort, and protects product quality. Below, we’ll break down standout models such as the Consort Claudgen He7426rx Air Curtain 6 Kw, Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw, and Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw, and show you how to compare features with total confidence.

How to Choose an Air Curtain: The Key Specs (Explained Simply)

Air curtains look similar across brands, but the right pick depends on your doorway and traffic flow. The trick is matching heat output, airflow, and controls to your space. Don’t worry—we’ll keep it simple and practical, using plain-English rules of thumb. Whether you’re eyeing compact overdoor heaters for a cozy café or higher-output units for a warehouse entry, the steps below will help you spot the best fit the first time.

Start with Door Size and Mounting Height

Measure the door width and how high you can mount above the opening. Most commercial installs sit roughly 7 to 10 feet from the floor. The wider and taller the doorway, the more airflow you need to maintain a strong barrier. Small entry around 30 to 36 inches wide? You’ll typically be fine with a compact model. Wider doors pushing past 48 inches or double sets that sit near 72 inches often demand beefier airflow or multiple units placed side by side.

Heat Output in BTU per Hour (What It Really Means)

Heat output tells you how much warmth the unit can deliver. Instead of metric, think in BTU per hour. As a handy reference, 3 kW is about 10,236 BTU/h, 4.5 kW around 15,354 BTU/h, 6 kW about 20,472 BTU/h, and 9 kW roughly 30,708 BTU/h. Higher BTU/h helps offset that constant in-and-out traffic on chilly days. If your door is busy or you run a draughty space, aim higher so the air curtain can keep up without running flat-out all day.

Airflow Strength and Noise

You’ll often see airflow expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM). More CFM equals a stronger “air seal,” especially valuable for taller placements or doors that open constantly. That said, stronger fans can be louder. For reception areas and quiet cafés, balancing airflow with acceptable sound is key. Look for units designed with quiet fan blades or variable fan speed so you can turn things down when the lobby is calm and up during the lunch rush.

Controls, Modes, and Smarter Operation

Controls can be basic or clever. You’ll find manual switches, over-door pull cords, adjustable thermostats, and on many models, options for automatic control via door switches that activate airflow only when the door is open. Some variants also integrate timers or remote-ready features so staff can tweak settings from a comfortable distance. Smarter controls don’t just add convenience; they help trim energy use while keeping the barrier effective all day.

Consort Claudgen Air Curtains: A Go-To for Busy Entrances

Consort Claudgen’s line is a staple for business and industrial sites thanks to broad coverage across small, medium, and larger openings. You’ll see a mix of HE and RAC series models, each geared for slightly different installs. The names in the lineup below appear often on comparison platforms because they’re proven workhorses with well-matched heat outputs for UK winters. Let’s unpack where each can shine.

Consort Claudgen He7426rx Air Curtain 6 Kw (About 20,472 BTU/h)

If your entrance falls in the medium range, the He7426rx stands out as a practical balance of heat output and airflow. That roughly 20,472 BTU/h gives you enough punch to stabilize indoor temps against frequent door openings, while typical install heights make it a tidy fit above standard commercial doors. Consider this if your doorway sits around 36 to 48 inches wide and you want a versatile unit that doesn’t overcomplicate the setup.

Consort Claudgen He7420 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw (About 15,354 BTU/h)

Got a smaller entrance or moderate traffic? The He7420 offers a friendly middle ground, especially for retail counters, small cafés, and boutique doors where space is tight and comfort matters. That approximate 15,354 BTU/h is a sweet spot for keeping customers warm at the threshold without overwhelming a compact storefront with excessive airflow or fan noise.

Consort Claudgen Rac0604 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw (About 15,354 BTU/h)

The Rac0604 belongs in the same heat-output class as the He7420, making it a contender for similar spaces. When you’re comparing the RAC and HE lines, weigh details such as housing style, available controls, and how the unit looks in your décor. Aesthetics matter at the entrance—if you’re renovating a stylish frontage, pick a profile that blends rather than shouts.

Consort Claudgen He7433 Air Curtain 9 Kw (About 30,708 BTU/h)

For larger or busier doors, the He7433 cranks up the heat output. That extra headroom helps stabilize temperatures when the door is practically revolving. If your entrance sees constant footfall or opens onto a breezy street, a higher BTU/h model helps you avoid cold spots and staff complaints. Consider this for wide entries, double doors, or spots where people linger near the threshold.

Consort Claudgen He7426 Air Curtain 6 Kw (About 20,472 BTU/h)

The He7426 mirrors the popular mid-output category, giving you a comfortable balance for general-purpose commercial installs. If you’re torn between the 4.5 kW and 6 kW classes, think about your traffic patterns. Does the door open and close all day? Do you notice drafts sneaking in? When in doubt, leaning slightly higher on heat output provides a cushion during cold snaps.

Consort Claudgen He8320 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw (About 15,354 BTU/h)

Another solid 4.5 kW-class option, the He8320 sits nicely for compact entrances and regular retail use. Its performance class is friendly to smaller shops where efficiency and comfort are the priorities. Pair it with a door switch if your opening pattern is predictable—automatic operation helps keep energy use in check without staff babysitting the controls.

Consort Claudgen Rac1006 Air Curtain 6 Kw (About 20,472 BTU/h)

In the 6 kW bracket, the Rac1006 competes as a strong mid-range solution that suits everything from convenience stores and showrooms to small industrial entries. If your site is on a busy street with gusty conditions, that extra oomph versus the 4.5 kW class can make the difference between a cozy entrance and a chilly greeting.

Consort Claudgen Rac1006rx Air Curtain 6 Kw (About 20,472 BTU/h)

This variant shares the same heat-output class as the Rac1006. When checking RX models, compare the control options and any compatibility for remote or automated operation that might streamline your day. For teams that juggle a lot at the front desk, convenient controls are a small upgrade that pays off every single day.

Dimplex Air Curtains: Compact, Reliable, and Popular

Dimplex offers well-known entries for smaller and medium-sized doorways where a reliable air barrier is non-negotiable. These models turn up frequently when you search for budget-conscious solutions that don’t skimp on core performance. If you need a no-fuss install with straightforward usability, this brand deserves a spot on your shortlist.

Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw (About 10,236 BTU/h)

For cozy cafés, narrow boutiques, or offices with a modest doorway, the Ac3n’s output hits a sweet spot. You get a meaningful air barrier and gentle heat to take the edge off the cold without overpowering the space. If you’ve ever felt a chilly ripple across a small reception, a 3 kW class unit is often enough to make that discomfort a memory.

Dimplex Ac45n Air Curtain 4.5 Kw (About 15,354 BTU/h)

Stepping up to the Ac45n increases warmth and airflow headroom, keeping you comfortable during colder snaps and busier hours. If your door is wider, or you’ve noticed persistent draughts, the 4.5 kW class gives you breathing room. Look for simple controls and tidy housings that tuck above the door without calling attention to themselves.

Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw (About 10,236 BTU/h)

The Hyco Maestro slots in nicely for smaller doors where energy efficiency and comfort matter in equal measure. Its 3 kW class output (roughly 10,236 BTU/h) supports reception areas, small shops, or service counters that see steady but not overwhelming traffic. If your aim is to remove that “cold shock” as the door opens, a compact model like this often does the trick without a complicated install.

Air Curtain Matchmaking: Which Model Fits Your Door?

Here’s an easy mental checklist. Small door, moderate traffic, and you care about comfort at the till? Consider 3 kW to 4.5 kW class units such as the Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw, Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw, or Consort Claudgen He7420 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw. Medium doors and busier flow? The 6 kW class—think Consort Claudgen He7426 Air Curtain 6 Kw or Rac1006—adds resilience. Larger or heavy-traffic entrances? The 9 kW class, like Consort Claudgen He7433 Air Curtain 9 Kw, provides the muscle you’ll be glad you chose in winter.

Installation and Placement Tips (So the Air Barrier Actually Works)

The best air curtain, poorly placed, won’t do its job. Mount it as close to the top of the opening as the unit allows, often around 7 to 10 feet high. Make sure the discharge air stream points slightly outward to meet incoming air and form a tight seal. If you’re covering a wide double door, consider two units shoulder-to-shoulder rather than one long unit that’s tough to mount. Keep electrical access, maintenance clearance, and safety in mind to avoid surprises later.

Energy-Savvy Operation Without Sacrificing Comfort

Air curtains save energy by reducing heat loss each time the door opens. To boost savings, match fan speed to real-world need. During quiet hours, slower airflow can maintain the barrier just fine; when crowds pick up, a higher setting keeps the shield strong. Thermostat and door-switch control can reduce unnecessary run time. And remember: letting your unit “coast” at a sensible setting often beats turning it off and on all day.

Maintenance: Small Habits That Prevent Big Headaches

Dust and debris are the silent enemy of airflow and heat exchange. Clean the intake and outlet grilles on a regular schedule—monthly in dusty sites, quarterly in cleaner environments. Check mounting brackets for tightness, test the controls, and listen for new noises that hint at fan wear. A quick visual inspection during routine cleaning pays for itself by preserving performance and avoiding cold drafts from a weakened air stream.

Heated vs. Unheated: Which One Should You Choose?

Unheated air curtains focus purely on creating an air barrier. They’re great for mild climates, spaces with strong indoor heating already, or industrial doors where the main goal is dust and fume control. Heated air curtains add that comfort boost customers and staff feel immediately in winter. If you’ve got a retail or hospitality setting, the warmth at the threshold often sways the decision. In truly high-traffic spots, the heated option can be the difference between happy customers and “why is it so cold here?”

What to Compare Beyond the Basics

Once you match output and size, dig into the details. Does the unit offer variable fan speeds? Is a door switch available or integrated? How simple is the filter or grille cleaning? Does the finish and shape flatter your entry or clash with it? Considering daily realities—like how your team will actually use the controls—makes your purchase feel smarter every time someone walks through the door.

Consort vs. Dimplex vs. Hyco: Standout Strengths

Consort Claudgen’s range is broad, making it easy to scale from small to high-demand doors with consistent styling. Dimplex models shine for compact, cost-conscious installs that still expect reliable performance. Hyco’s Maestro fits neatly into modest entries where value and comfort go hand in hand. Your best bet? Compare like-for-like heat classes—3 kW, 4.5 kW, 6 kW, and 9 kW equivalents—then weigh control options and looks to seal the deal.

Beyond Air Curtains: Other Useful Business & Industrial Essentials

While air curtains grab the spotlight for entrances, don’t forget other front-line comfort and safety products. Consider electric hand dryers for hygiene, space heaters for draft-prone corners, dehumidifiers to protect stock, and PVC strip curtains for loading bays that stay open longer than your main door. When used together with an air curtain, these extras help stabilize your environment, reduce waste, and make every square foot more productive.

How to Use Comparison Sites to Your Advantage

Price tags only tell part of the story. Comparison platforms let you line up similar models by heat output, estimated airflow, and control options so you can decide quickly. Make a shortlist by BTU/h class and door size, then dig into user impressions and install notes. This way, you avoid paying for capability you don’t need—or skimping and wishing you had gone one step up when temperatures drop.

Sizing Examples You Can Steal

Picture a compact café with a 36-inch door that sees steady but light traffic. A 3 kW class unit such as Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw or Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw usually covers it. Now imagine a convenience store with a wider door and constant throughput—something in the 4.5 kW to 6 kW range like Consort Claudgen He7420 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw or He7426 Air Curtain 6 Kw makes sense. A busy showroom with double doors? A 9 kW class choice like the Consort Claudgen He7433 Air Curtain 9 Kw can help keep the welcome area consistently warm.

Aesthetics and First Impressions

Your entrance is your handshake. Sleek housings that blend into the header make the technology feel invisible—customers just notice the comfort. If your brand leans modern, a minimalist profile is your friend. Traditional or rustic décor? Go for finishes and shapes that complement the setting. The air curtain should support your first impression, not distract from it.

Safety and Compliance Considerations

Always follow manufacturer guidance and local regulations. Ensure adequate clearance from ceilings, signage, or shelving to keep airflow unobstructed. If you’re operating in food service, check hygiene requirements and select models that simplify cleaning. For industrial sites, consider how the unit’s airflow may interact with dust control measures or fumes—proper placement helps your safety systems work together, not against each other.

Seasonal Tweaks That Pay Off

As the seasons change, so should your settings. In the cold months, a higher heat and moderate fan speed might be perfect. When it warms up, dial back the heat and let the airflow work primarily as a barrier. A quick quarterly check-in to adjust settings to the weather can make your energy bills friendlier without sacrificing comfort at the door.

Troubleshooting Common Air Curtain Issues

Feeling a draft at ankle level? You may need to tilt the discharge angle slightly or increase fan speed. Not getting warmth at the threshold? Confirm your heat setting and verify that the unit isn’t blocked by signage or décor that’s redirecting the stream. Strange noise? A loose grille or dust build-up could be the culprit—power down and give it a careful clean. Most fixes are simple once you know what to look for.

Bringing It All Together

Air curtains are quiet heroes. They help hold in warmth, keep outdoor air at bay, and make your doorway feel welcoming. With models across the range—Consort Claudgen He7426rx Air Curtain 6 Kw, He7420 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw, Rac0604 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw, He7433 Air Curtain 9 Kw, He7426 Air Curtain 6 Kw, He8320 Air Curtain 4.5 Kw, Rac1006 Air Curtain 6 Kw, Rac1006rx Air Curtain 6 Kw; Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw and Ac45n Air Curtain 4.5 Kw; and Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw—you’ve got options for every door size and traffic level. Match BTU/h to your doorway, pick sensible controls, and keep up with quick cleaning. Do that, and your “invisible door” will pay you back day after day.

Conclusion

Choosing the right air curtain isn’t complicated when you focus on the basics: door size, traffic, heat output in BTU/h, and the controls your team will use every day. For smaller entries, 3 kW class units like Dimplex Ac3n Air Curtain 3 Kw or Hyco Maestro Air Curtain 3kw often hit the mark. For busier doors, Consort Claudgen’s 4.5 kW and 6 kW classes—He7420, He7426, He8320, and Rac1006—offer dependable coverage, while the He7433 in the 9 kW class serves larger or high-traffic entrances. Compare like with like, think practically about aesthetics and maintenance, and you’ll create a comfortable, efficient threshold that makes every arrival feel like a warm welcome.
