How often do I need to replace or refill a CO2 cylinder?

Most standard CO2 cylinders carbonate roughly 15–16 gallons of water, which usually translates to many dozens of 16-ounce servings. How long one cylinder lasts depends on how fizzy you like your drinks and how often you use the machine. Heavy users often keep a spare cylinder on hand to avoid downtime.

Can I use any bottle with my soda maker?

No—many machines require pressure-rated bottles designed for carbonation. Some models use proprietary bottles while others accept universal bottles. Always check the manufacturer’s guidance and use only bottles rated for carbonation; using non-rated bottles can be dangerous.

Are syrup concentrates safe and do they contain sugar?

Syrup concentrates are formulated for home use and are generally safe when used as directed. Some syrups are sugar-free or low-calorie and use sweeteners instead of sugar, while classic syrups contain sugar. If you’re watching sugar intake, look for zero-sugar or reduced-sugar options and always follow dilution instructions.

Is a wall-mounted soda maker difficult to install?

Wall-mounted models typically require basic installation—usually a couple of screws into a solid wall surface. If you’re comfortable with simple DIY tasks, it’s straightforward. Renters or those who prefer no drilling may opt for countertop units instead.

Will a soda maker fit under kitchen cabinets?

Most countertop soda makers are compact and fit easily under standard cabinets, but premium or taller models may need a bit more vertical clearance. Before purchasing, measure the height between your counter and cabinet—typical machines are under 12 inches tall, but always confirm the exact dimensions for the model you choose.

Unleash Refreshment: The Best Soda Makers to Transform Your Kitchen

Why a soda maker belongs in your home

If you love the fizz of a sparkling drink but dislike the plastic clutter and extra trips to the store, a soda maker is a game changer. These countertop gadgets turn plain tap water into sparkling water in seconds, and they give you full control over bubble strength and flavor. Think of them as a soda fountain for your kitchen—compact, convenient, and friendly to both your wallet and the planet. Whether you’re after a sleek wall-mounted unit or a versatile machine with syrup bundles, there’s a model to match your taste and lifestyle.

Top soda makers you’ll want to consider

There are a few standout names on the market right now: Stelton’s design-led Fizz and Brus models, SodaStream’s popular Terra and Duo lines, and Sage’s premium Infizz Fusion. Each one takes a slightly different approach—some emphasize design, others focus on user-friendliness or accessory bundles like syrup packs. Below I break down the key models so you can picture which one fits your counter, your budget, and your bubble preferences.

Stelton Fizz Wall-mounted Soda Machine (Black)

The Stelton Fizz wall-mounted soda machine doubles as a piece of kitchen art. If counter space is tight, mounting a soda maker on the wall is like giving your kitchen vertical real estate for fizz. It’s ideal for small kitchens and creates a clean, minimalist look. Users praise its solid build and streamlined operation—push a lever and you get a controlled stream of bubbles. It’s eye-catching in black and keeps the workstation free for other appliances.

SodaStream Terra (Black)

SodaStream’s Terra is one of the most user-friendly options available. It’s a great entry-level machine that offers manual carbonation with a pressure button, delivering consistent fizz every time. The Terra usually ships with a reusable carbonating bottle and works with standard CO2 exchange cylinders, so ongoing running costs are straightforward. If you want a reliable machine that won’t break the bank and fits stylishly in black on a countertop, this is a strong contender.

Sage The Infizz Fusion SCA800NRE (Noir Edition)

Sage’s Infizz Fusion is a premium model aimed at people who love tech and refinement. It blends a powerful carbonation mechanism with refined controls and a heavier build, giving a restaurant-level feel. Expect solid stainless accents, responsive buttons, and a bottle mount that handles higher pressure. It’s perfect if you entertain a lot or if you want an appliance that looks at home in a high-end kitchen. The Noir edition adds a sleek, modern vibe.

Stelton Brus Carbonator (Steel)

The Stelton Brus Carbonator is another design-forward player, crafted from steel and built to last. It focuses on durability and minimalist aesthetics, easily integrating into contemporary kitchens. The steel finish is fingerprint-resistant and elegant, making it a conversation piece as well as a functional tool. It’s particularly suited for households that value form as much as function.

SodaStream Duo (White or Black, 2 Bottles)

The SodaStream Duo line is all about versatility. It supports both reusable carbonating bottles and certain types of disposable bottles, which can be useful if you want to take a bottle on the go. Typically sold as a two-bottle pack in white or black, the Duo is perfect for families or couples who drink sparkling water daily. Many bundles include syrup sets—seven-up, Mirinda, energy drink flavors—so you can experiment right away.

SodaStream Terra and Duo Syrup Sets (7up, Mirinda, Energy)

If you enjoy flavored fizzy drinks, the syrup sets that pair with Terra and Duo units open up a world of flavor. Classic cola and lemon-lime flavors like 7up, citrus blends like Mirinda, and energy-style syrups let you mimic bottled soft drinks at a fraction of the price. Just remember that many syrups are concentrated, so a little goes a long way—typically a small capful per 12-16 ounce glass—and they’re easy to store in the pantry.

Comparing features: what really matters

When you’re sizing up models, consider five key points: carbonation control, bottle compatibility, CO2 cylinder system, build quality, and ease of use. Carbonation control determines how fizzy your drink gets; manual push-button machines let you customize bubble intensity, while automatic units may have preset levels. Bottle compatibility matters for convenience—some machines only accept specific branded bottles, while others allow universal carbonating bottles that can fit in different holders.

Carbonation control: gentle bubbles or soda-shop fizz?

If you prefer a gentle sparkle for cocktails and mixers, a machine with incremental carbonation is ideal. For stronger soda-shop fizz, look for models that can handle higher pressure. Manual systems let you stop at the exact moment your drink hits the level you like—think of it like tuning a radio until the station comes in perfectly clear.

CO2 cylinders: refill, exchange, or buy new?

CO2 is the engine of any soda maker. Most home machines use standard CO2 cylinders that you can swap or refill. A typical exchange cylinder will carbonate roughly 15–16 gallons of water, which translates to dozens of 16-ounce glasses of sparkling water. Cost per refill varies by supplier, so check local exchange options. Some premium machines accept custom cylinders or offer buy-back programs, while budget models stick with the common exchange size to keep ongoing costs predictable.

Buying guide: matching features to your lifestyle

Are you a design lover, a budget watcher, or a flavor experimenter? Your priorities will steer you toward different models. If beauty and a small footprint are key, the Stelton wall-mounted units are winners. If you want affordability and simplicity, SodaStream’s Terra or Duo lines deliver reliable results at a modest price. If you crave a premium, heavy-duty machine with restaurant-style performance, Sage’s Infizz Fusion earns its price tag.

Budget vs premium: what to expect

Budget machines typically provide straightforward carbonation with basic buttons and included bottles. Premium machines add metal finishes, enhanced pressure systems, and often better warranties. Consider how often you’ll use the device: daily users may justify a higher initial cost for a durable model that reduces maintenance and replacement expenses over time.

Counter space and installation

Measure your kitchen before buying. Wall-mounted models save counter space but require installation—usually minimal drilling—so plan accordingly. Countertop units come in compact sizes, often under a foot wide and a foot deep, while premium models may be slightly taller. If you’re renting, a countertop model avoids any installation hassles.

Maintenance, safety, and longevity

Cleaning a soda maker is generally simple: rinse the bottle after each use, hand-wash caps and seals, and wipe the machine with a damp cloth. Never put carbonating bottles in the dishwasher unless the manufacturer explicitly states they’re dishwasher-safe—exposure to high heat can warp pressure-rated bottles and reduce carbonation performance. For safety, always follow instructions when attaching CO2 cylinders: tighten by hand and avoid over-torquing. Store spare cylinders upright and away from direct heat.

Flavor ideas and quick recipes

Making flavored sparkling drinks at home is as simple as adding a splash of syrup, a squeeze of fresh citrus, or muddled fruit to a glass of chilled carbonated water. Try these quick mixes: a lemon-lime spritz with a tablespoon of syrup and a wedge of lime, a berry-infused fizz by mashing a handful of raspberries then topping with cold carbonated water, or a mock energy fizz by adding a small measure of energy-flavored syrup and a slice of orange. For cocktails, consider swapping mixer sodas for homemade sparkling water to control sweetness and reduce calories.

Environmental and cost benefits

Home carbonation cuts plastic bottle waste dramatically. Reusable carbonating bottles replace dozens of single-use bottles, and many CO2 suppliers offer cylinder refill schemes that reduce waste further. Financially, initial costs can be recovered quickly: a reusable system typically pays for itself in a few months if you drink sparkling water regularly. The more you use it, the faster you save—and your recycling bin will thank you.

Accessories and extras worth considering

Beyond the machine itself, consider extras like spare carbonating bottles, extra CO2 cylinders for heavy users, and syrup bundles to experiment with flavors. Replacement seals and caps are inexpensive but important—losing one shouldn’t stop your carbonation habit. Some brands offer carry-cap adapters for taking a sealed bottle on the go, which is handy for picnics or trips to the gym.

Which model should you pick?

If you want a stylish, space-saving setup and you love a clean aesthetic, the Stelton Fizz wall-mounted machine or the Stelton Brus steel carbonator are excellent choices. For no-fuss reliability and affordable refills, SodaStream Terra or Duo models provide a practical, tried-and-tested route. And if you prefer a premium performance machine with refined controls and a solid feel, Sage’s The Infizz Fusion is worth the investment. Ultimately, match the model to how often you’ll use it, how much counter space you have, and whether you plan to experiment with syrups and cocktails.

Final thoughts before you add one to your kitchen

Picking a soda maker is part practicality, part personality. Do you want something that's barely there and elegant, or something robust that feels like a commercial machine? Think about bottle types, refill options, and the types of drinks you’ll make most often. The right machine will make everyday hydration more fun and cut down on waste and store trips. Ready to pick one and start fizzing?

Conclusion: A soda maker is a small investment with big rewards—saving money, reducing waste, and letting you craft custom fizzy drinks at home. Whether you gravitate toward the Stelton aesthetic, the SodaStream practicalities, or the Sage premium feel, there's a model to match your taste. Consider your kitchen space, carbonation preferences, and how adventurous you are with flavors, and you’ll end up with a machine that feels like it was made just for you.
