From pub sessions to festival stages, accordions and concertinas are popping up everywhere in the UK. They’re portable, expressive, and downright fun. Whether you’re learning your first tune or upgrading to a performance-ready instrument, knowing how to compare models, spot genuine value, and read a realistic price list can save you serious cash. Ready to navigate offers with confidence? Let’s break it all down in plain English, with practical tips that help you buy smarter and play happier.
If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re an “accordion person” or a “concertina person,” you’re not alone. Both instruments use reeds and bellows, but they feel and sound different in the hands. Accordions typically offer broader dynamic range and more volume on stage. Concertinas shine when you want agility, subtlety, and that authentic folk charm. Your style, budget, and body comfort will do most of the deciding—so let’s explore what that looks like in practice.
Piano accordions use a small piano-style keyboard on the right hand, making them a friendly crossover for anyone with piano experience. Button accordions swap keys for buttons, often giving you more notes in a compact space and offering distinct folk flavors. For Irish, Cajun, or Tex-Mex styles, button models are beloved. For jazz standards, classical themes, and singer-songwriter sets, piano accordions feel intuitive and versatile.
Anglo concertinas are bisonoric—push and pull produce different notes—giving them a punchy, rhythmic vibe perfect for dance tunes. English concertinas are unisonoric, so the same note sounds on push or pull; they’re great for fluid melodies and sight-reading. Duet concertinas allow harmony and melody together, ideal for solo performers who want to sound bigger without carrying a larger box.
Picture where you’ll actually be playing: living room practice, weekly pub sessions, busking, or amplified gigs. If you’re mainly playing solo, you might want an instrument with a warm, full voice. Joining a lively session? A compact, punchy model might be the ticket. When in doubt, go for an instrument that makes you want to pick it up every day. The joy factor is a bigger predictor of progress than any spec sheet.
Folk and traditional dance music often favor Anglo concertinas or diatonic button accordions for their lively drive. Jazz, tango, and classical? Piano accordions or English concertinas offer smooth chromatic possibilities. Singer-songwriters frequently love piano accordions for the right-hand familiarity and built-in left-hand accompaniment.
If you commute or travel, a compact instrument makes a huge difference. Many beginners don’t consider weight until their shoulders complain. A light concertina can feel effortless, while a larger accordion might require a supportive back strap and a padded case. Try before you buy if possible, and always check weight in pounds, not just size descriptions.
Why do two similar-looking instruments cost wildly different amounts? Materials, reeds, action, and build quality tell the story. Spend a few minutes learning these basics and you’ll read any price list like a pro. Higher prices usually mean better reliability, smoother mechanics, and richer tone—benefits you’ll notice every time you play.
Hand-finished reeds generally respond quicker and sound sweeter than machine-only reeds. Some accordions feature multiple reed banks and register switches for tonal variety. Concertinas may vary in reed plate style and responsiveness. If you plan to play in sessions, ask about tuning stability and ease of service; your future self will thank you.
Bellows are the lungs of your instrument—supple bellows offer nuanced dynamics and less fatigue. On accordions, button or key action should feel crisp but not stiff; on concertinas, the button travel and spring resistance should be comfortable for your fingers. Smooth, reliable action helps you play longer with fewer mistakes.
Solid, well-fitted wood or high-quality composite housings improve resonance and durability. Good straps, secure hardware, and reliable air valves matter, especially if you gig. A tidy finish isn’t just cosmetic—it often reflects overall craftsmanship inside the instrument too.
You’ll see numbers like “48-bass,” “72-bass,” and “120-bass” for accordions; that’s the left-hand accompaniment capability. On the right hand, piano accordions vary in keyboard length, often housed in bodies that can range roughly from about 11 in wide for smaller student models to larger performance models stretching beyond 17 in. Concertinas typically have 20, 30, or more buttons, with compact bodies that nestle easily in both hands.
Small piano accordions with fewer bass buttons or compact diatonic button accordions are ideal if you’re moving around a lot. Many fit nicely in cases that are about 16 in to 20 in long, sliding neatly into car boots or overhead shelves. Lightweight concertinas are even easier, often weighing just a few pounds and slipping into a backpack-style gig bag.
Stepping into a 72-bass or 96-bass accordion gets you more harmonic options without the heft of a full 120-bass. The body might be a couple of inches wider and taller, but the musical payoff can be huge. For concertinas, a 30-button Anglo or a comparable English model opens up rich keys and ornamentation options used in many traditional repertoires.
Prices vary widely, and that’s okay—knowing your lane helps. Beginners can find playable instruments without spending a fortune, while serious players often invest more for tone and reliability. Remember: use a comparison site to scan multiple sellers, watch for promotions, and read user feedback before committing.
Entry-level concertinas and smaller accordions are typically the most affordable. Expect basic materials and simpler actions that still get the job done. If you’re new, start here, learn what you love, then upgrade once you’ve outgrown it. You’ll avoid overspending while discovering your preferences.
This is where value shines—improved reeds, better bellows, more comfortable action, and tougher housings. For many players, the intermediate tier offers the best ratio of cost to quality. It’s a smart target if you’re already practicing regularly or joining sessions.
Premium models deliver nuanced tone, superior reliability, and extended longevity. Gigging musicians and serious hobbyists gravitate here for the confidence that a top-tier instrument provides on stage and in the studio. If you perform often, the extra spend can feel worth it every time you play.
Looking for a first accordion? Keep it comfortable and musical. Prioritize balanced weight, solid bellows, and an action that doesn’t fight you. Enthusiasts stepping up should look for instruments that respond quickly and offer more tonal color via extra reeds or register switches.
For a first piano accordion, a compact model with a manageable body—think around 15 in to 17 in wide—can make practice sessions a breeze. The right-hand keyboard should feel even across the range, and the left-hand buttons should click precisely without wobble. A reliable strap system and a lightweight case are the cherry on top.
Diatonic button accordions for beginners should offer clearly labeled rows, comfortable spacing, and modest weight. If your style leans toward folk or dance tunes, you’ll appreciate the lively sound right away. Some players prefer wood finishes for a classic look; others like durable modern shells—both can be great if the action is smooth.
Once you’re fluent with fundamentals, consider adding reed banks or stepping up to a 72-bass or 96-bass instrument. If you’re going button, improved reeds and tighter action will make your ornaments and bellows phrasing sparkle. Try a few models in person if possible; hand feel is highly personal.
Choosing a concertina is like choosing a dance partner—feel and response matter. Anglo models snap with rhythmic energy, English models glide through melodic lines, and duets let you be your own mini orchestra. Start with a size and layout that matches the music you love most.
A 30-button Anglo offers a versatile toolkit for traditional tunes. Look for precise button alignment, consistent spring tension, and a case with sturdy corners. If you play outdoors or at lively sessions, favor models with strong projection so you’re heard without strain.
English concertinas shine for melody work and reading from notation. A responsive action helps with quick passages, and stable tuning keeps harmonies sweet in ensemble settings. If you sing, the English’s smooth phrasing can complement your voice beautifully.
Duet systems put melody and accompaniment at your fingertips. If you perform solo, this can be a game changer. Check that the instrument sits comfortably in your hands; even small differences in width or hand rest design—think fractions of an inch—can affect long-term comfort.
Accessories aren’t just nice-to-haves—they protect your investment and boost your sound. When comparing offers, factor in what’s included: a well-fitted case, padded straps, or even a maintenance kit can deliver real-world value beyond the instrument itself.
A hard case with solid latches and padding keeps your reeds safe during trips. For accordions, add padded shoulder straps and a back strap to distribute weight across your torso. If you play standing, a reliable stand or a non-slip performance strap setup reduces fatigue during longer sets.
If you plan to gig, consider clip-on mics or internal pickups designed for free-reed instruments. They help capture nuance without feedback. Keep the setup simple: a quality mic, a tidy cable run, and a small preamp can transform your live sound without adding bulk to your kit.
Bellows tape, soft brushes, lint-free cloths, and valve-friendly cleaners are your best friends. A few minutes of care after each session—wiping moisture, checking straps, inspecting corners—adds years to your instrument’s life. Think of it like tuning up a beloved bicycle.
Prices can fluctuate across multiple retailers, especially during seasonal sales. Using a comparison site helps you see popular offers side by side, spot outliers, and avoid overpaying. Don’t rush—great deals come around, and a little patience can land you the perfect match at the perfect price.
Want to buy at the right moment? Watch price trends and set alerts so you’re notified when an accordion or concertina drops into your budget zone. This also helps you recognize genuine discounts versus routine pricing.
New instruments offer warranties, pristine condition, and known provenance. Pre-owned can save money and sometimes deliver higher-tier quality for less. If you go used, ask for clear photos of bellows corners, button wear, and reed plates if available. A short video demo with chords and scales is worth its weight in gold.
You don’t need marathon practice sessions to improve—aim for short, consistent bursts. Warm up with bellows control exercises, then focus on one tune or technique at a time. Record yourself weekly; you’ll hear subtle improvements you might miss in the moment. Small wins fuel momentum.
For accordions, adjust strap length so the keyboard sits where your hands naturally fall—usually a touch below mid-torso when standing. Keep shoulders relaxed and let the bellows do the breathing. With concertinas, support the instrument lightly and avoid clenching; smooth bellows control is the secret sauce.
Pick tunes you love. If you enjoy playing them, you’ll practice more. Alternate between slow, accurate reps and up-to-speed runs. For tricky passages, break them into 2-bar chunks, master each, then stitch them together. It’s like building with sturdy blocks instead of wrestling a whole wall at once.
Treat your instrument right and it will reward you for decades. Control humidity, avoid damp storage, and never leave it in a hot car. After each session, give it a quick clean and let it air for a few minutes before closing the case. Little habits save big money down the road.
Store your accordion or concertina in a case that fits snugly without compressing the bellows. Wipe finger oils from buttons or keys with a soft cloth. If you’ve played in a humid or cold space, let the instrument rest open on a table for a short while before packing up.
Reeds may drift over time. Light tuning and valve checks by a specialist keep your tone sweet and response quick. If something feels off—sticking buttons, air leaks, odd buzz—book a service rather than forcing it. Preventative care is cheaper than major repairs.
Make a short checklist: style (folk, jazz, classical, session), size and weight comfort, build quality, and budget. Compare multiple offers, read reliable reviews, and listen to demos with headphones. If your heart lights up when you hear it, that’s your sign. With a smart comparison, a fair price list, and a little patience, the right accordion or concertina is closer than you think.
