Power Tool Batteries FAQs
How do I choose between compact and high-capacity batteries?
Pick compact batteries when you need a lighter tool for overhead or precision work, like electrical or cabinet installs. Choose high-capacity packs for high-demand tools—circular saws, grinders, and demolition—where longer runtime and sustained power matter more than weight. Many users keep both and swap based on the task.
Will a higher amp-hour battery make my tool more powerful?
Not directly. Amp-hours increase runtime, not the tool’s peak power rating. That said, high-capacity or high-output packs can sustain higher current without overheating, so your tool may feel stronger for longer under heavy load compared with a small, compact battery.
Is a rapid charger worth it?
If you cycle batteries frequently, yes. Rapid chargers cut downtime significantly. To protect longevity, let hot batteries cool to room temperature before charging, and alternate with a standard charger when possible to reduce heat stress on your packs.
Can I leave batteries on the charger overnight?
Most modern chargers stop charging automatically, but it’s better practice to remove batteries after they’re full. This reduces heat exposure, keeps packs in a healthier state of charge, and helps them last longer over hundreds of cycles.
What’s the best way to store batteries I won’t use for a while?
Store them partially charged in a cool, dry place around 59–77°F. Avoid extreme heat, keep terminals clean, and check them every few months. Top them off briefly if they drop too low to keep the cells healthy.
