Cheerleading Pom Poms

Ever watched a cheer routine and felt a surge of energy the moment the pom poms hit the beat? That spark isn’t accidental. Pom poms are the visual exclamation point of every cheer — they catch light, amplify motion, and give rhythm a flashy partner. Choosing the right pair is like picking the right instrument for a band: the wrong one makes the song flat, the right one makes the crowd sing along.
Not all pom poms are created equal. Materials, construction, and finish determine how they look, sound, and perform. Whether you’re buying for youth squads, high school teams, or competitive squads, understanding types helps you match style with function.
Metallic or chrome-style pom poms use foil or metallized polyester to deliver maximum shine. They’re the go-to for night games and indoor showcases because they catch stadium lights and camera flashes. Expect strands about 1/4 inch wide and lengths from 6 to 12 inches. They’re lightweight — usually just a few ounces per pom — but delicate; sharp handling can cause crimping.
Polypropylene or plastic pom poms are durable and budget-friendly. They bend without tearing and tolerate rain and sweat better than delicate metallics. They come in a huge range of colors, often with thicker handles for reliable grips. If your squad practices outdoors a lot or needs long-lasting practice poms, these are a solid choice.
Tissue-style poms are best for one-off events, parades, or crafts. They’re ultra-light and easy to fold for storage, but they don’t survive heavy use or wet weather. Think of them as confetti that you can wave — bright and theatrical but not built for two-a-day practices.
Hybrids combine materials — metallic strands mixed with thicker plastic streamers, or strands with holographic strips — to create texture and depth. Specialty pom poms might include LED lights, sound strips, or printed strands for logos. These are often used for signature routines or themed performances.
Size matters. Pom poms typically range from about 6 inches for small wrists to 14 inches for dramatic effect. But size isn’t just measured in inches; weight and balance alter how a pom feels in the hand during long routines.
Small poms — around 6 to 8 inches — are often used by young children or by cheerleaders doing intricate hand motions where a bulky prop would slow them down. They usually weigh less than 2 ounces each, which keeps arm fatigue low.
Medium-size pom poms are the most versatile. At about 9 to 10 inches, they strike a balance between visibility and agility. Most high school teams prefer these for game-day use because they’re visible from the stands without feeling cumbersome.
Large pom poms deliver drama. They’re great for large arenas and halftime shows where distance separates you from the audience. Expect these to weigh more — sometimes up to a quarter pound each — but the visual payoff often justifies the extra effort.
Handles are the unsung heroes. A great strand can be ruined by a flimsy handle that slips mid-routine. Handles vary from simple cardboard to foam-wrapped grips designed for sweaty palms.
Ring handles are plastic loops that allow fingers to slip through and anchor the hand. They’re secure and make quick transitions easier, especially when high-energy tumbling follows stunting. However, they can cause pressure points if used for long stretches without padding.
Tube handles — a hollow plastic cylinder — offer a classic feel and work well with a two-handed grip. Foam-wrapped tube handles add cushioning and reduce slipping. Look for foam that’s about 1/4 inch thick to keep the comfort without adding bulk.
Cord or elastic handles are common on inexpensive practice poms and some novelty products. They’re lightweight and compact for storage but can stretch out over time. If you pick elastic handles, expect to replace them after heavy use.
Colors communicate team identity and mood. Metallic silver and gold shout sophistication, while bold team colors energize fans. Holographic finishes add a rainbow sheen that looks amazing under spotlights.
When picking colors, consider contrast. White pom poms against dark uniforms create pop; black poms can look elegant but may disappear under certain lights. Many suppliers offer custom strand mixes so you can blend two or three team colors for a striped effect.
Holographic strands shimmer with multi-color reflections as they turn. Gloss finishes reflect clean, sharp light, while matte strands give a softer, less reflective look which works well for daytime outdoor events to avoid glare.
Durability is about more than toughness; it’s about retaining color, preventing tangles, and holding up to repeated shaking, stomping, and tossing. Poly pom poms resist water and keep their shape. Metallics look dazzling but crease if mishandled. Hybrid strands aim to split the difference.
Treat your poms like musical instruments — a little care goes a long way. Proper storage, gentle cleaning, and occasional fluffing keep them performance-ready season after season.
Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for small stains. Avoid machine washing, which will warp handles and crumple metallic strands. For plastic poms, a quick rinse in cool water followed by air-drying works fine. Always squeeze out excess water gently; don’t wring.
Store poms in a breathable bag or a shallow box so strands aren’t crushed by heavy items. If you must stack them, place a flat board on top to keep weight distributed evenly. For travel, loop handles together and place in a soft-sided duffel to avoid harsh compressive forces.
If strands get flattened, hang poms upside-down and gently shake; many strands will regain volume once they settle. For metallics, a warm room and light shaking usually help the foil relax. Avoid heat guns or irons — they’ll melt synthetic fibers.
Want to stand out? Custom options let you add team names, logos, or unique color blends. Personalization ranges from printed handles to custom strand mixes and even sewn-in team patches.
Handles are often the easiest place to brand. A printed handle with a team name or mascot gives a polished look and is great for fundraising sales. For logos on strands, printed or woven options exist, but these are usually pricier and best for small orders or signature events.
On a budget? Buy plain poms and add ribbon, fabric strips, or taped accents yourself. Hot glue isn’t recommended on metallic strands, but a few wrapped ribbons secured under the handle can create a custom flair without compromising strand movement.
Pom poms pair naturally with other cheer gear. Coordinating shoes, bows, and megaphones creates a cohesive presentation and can sometimes be bundled for cost savings.
Lightweight cheer shoes with a low profile help you move freely while providing the support needed for jumps and landings. Choose shoes designed for indoor use if your routine is mostly on gym floors; look for non-marking soles and good ankle support.
Hair bows match team colors and keep hair out of faces. Wristbands can echo pom pom colors and add a tidier look when arms are in motion. Both are inexpensive ways to elevate the ensemble.
With so many options, how do you avoid buyer’s remorse? Think like a coach and a fan: durability and visibility score points, while low cost without quality is a false economy.
Low-cost poms are great for pep rallies and crafts, but they won’t survive competitive use. If your team rehearses several times a week, invest in mid-range poly or hybrid pom poms that balance shine and toughness. Expect competitive-grade poms to cost more per pair but last multiple seasons.
Buying in bulk usually brings the best per-unit price, but check quality samples first. Many suppliers offer sample packs or single pom options so you can test texture, weight, and handle comfort before committing to a full team order.
Before you click “buy,” run through a checklist: What size do you need in inches? How much does each pom weigh in ounces? Are the handles padded? Is the finish metallic or matte? Does the supplier offer customization? Answering these will keep purchases aligned with performance needs.
Teams often pick pom poms based on price or appearance alone and then wonder why their props fall apart mid-season. Anticipating how poms will be used — indoor vs outdoor, practice vs competition — will save money and frustration.
Size affects choreography. If poms are too big, intricate moves get clumsy; too small, and they disappear from the nosebleed seats. Try a range of sizes during rehearsal to find the best compromise.
Never underestimate handle comfort. A lack of padding leads to blisters and sloppy technique. If you get blisters in practice, switch to foam-grip handles or add a soft tape wrap for cushioning.
Rotate practice and game poms. Keep a set of tougher, less flashy poms for everyday practice and reserve your showy metallics for big performances. Label sets with tape and permanent marker to track aging and retire poms before they break mid-routine.
Also, involve your squad in the selection process. Different athletes prefer different balances of weight and size; testing a few styles in rehearsal helps you pick a uniform set everyone can use confidently.
Comparison sites and sports suppliers are where you’ll find the widest range of prices and styles. Look for sellers that offer clear photos, strand close-ups, and handle details measured in inches and ounces. Reading team reviews will show how different pom poms hold up under real-world conditions.
Pom poms are more than colorful accessories — they’re instruments of performance. Selecting the right pair means balancing size, material, handle comfort, and budget. Whether you’re shopping for a youth squad that needs durable, inexpensive practice poms or a competitive team craving high-shine metallics, the right choice will boost both confidence and crowd reaction. Treat your poms with care, rotate them between practice and performance, and make informed purchases by sampling options in inches and ounces before committing to a full team order. With the right combination of style and substance, your team will look sharper, move cleaner, and command more attention from the stands.
