How do I pick the best inseam length for my runs?

Choose based on run type: 3-inch inseams are best for speed and hot weather, 5-inch is an all-around option, and 7-inch or longer gives more coverage for long runs and trails. Try different lengths to see which feels best with your stride and modesty preferences.

Are compression shorts worth the cost?

Compression shorts offer muscle support, reduced bounce, and can help with recovery for intense sessions. They’re especially useful for intervals and races, though casual runners might prefer looser shorts for everyday comfort. Consider one pair if you do a lot of tempo work or racing.

What features should I look for if I run trails?

On trails, prioritize durable fabric, secure pockets or zip compartments for gels and a phone, and a slightly longer inseam for protection against brush. Reinforced seams and quick-dry material are helpful when conditions get wet or muddy.

How do I prevent chafing from shorts?

Choose shorts with a comfortable liner or wear performance underwear, seek flat seams, and avoid oversized fabric that bunches. Apply anti-chafe balm to vulnerable spots before long runs and make sure your waistband fits snugly without pinching.

Can I use gym shorts for running?

Yes—many gym shorts like Adidas Saturday or Craft Joy work well for running if they offer moisture-wicking fabric, a secure waistband, and a liner. For long or intense runs, you may prefer purpose-built running shorts for better ventilation and reduced chafe.

Best Men's Running Shorts for Speed and Comfort: Top Picks, Buying Guide, and Practical Tips

Why the right running shorts change your run

Picking running shorts is like choosing the right pair of running shoes: the wrong choice can hold you back, while the right one can make every mile feel smoother. Whether you’re chasing a personal best on a 3-mile tempo, heading out for a slow 10-mile jog, or hitting the trails, the shorts you wear affect comfort, temperature regulation, and even your stride. In this guide I’ll walk you through the best men’s running shorts—focusing on popular models like the Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort tight, Under Armour Fly By Elite 3-inch shorts, Adidas D4s, The North Face Limitless Run Short, and other top contenders—so you can stop guessing and start running.

Top picks at a glance

Here’s a quick snapshot before we dig deeper: compression shorts like the Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort offer muscle support and reduced bounce; the Under Armour Fly By Elite is a go-to for short, fast sessions with a 3-inch inseam; Adidas D4s and Adidas Saturday shorts balance everyday comfort with good performance; The North Face Limitless Run Short is built for longer runs and trails; and budget-minded brands like Endurance and North Bend give solid value. Read on to find out which fits your needs.

Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort Tight For Men - Compression Running Shorts

The Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort tight is a compression-style short aimed at runners who want muscle support and a locked-in feel. Think of these as a second skin: they hug your quads and glutes to reduce muscle oscillation on fast intervals and races. They pair well under looser outer shorts or stand alone for short, intense sessions. If you’re into tempo runs, track work, or races under 10 miles, these give a blend of breathability and targeted support that can help you push harder.

Under Armour Fly By Elite 3 Inch Shorts

If you love short inseams, the Under Armour Fly By Elite 3-inch shorts are classic. The 3-inch inseam gives maximum Freedom Of Movement and minimal fabric weight—ideal for speed sessions and hot-weather runs. These usually include an inner brief, moisture-wicking fabric, and a small pocket for a key or energy gel. If you want to feel unencumbered and fast, 3-inch shorts are like running in a wind tunnel for your legs—light and liberating.

Adidas D4s Shorts

Adidas D4s shorts hit a great middle ground for casual runners who want a reliable daily short. They often come with a comfortable liner, stretch fabric, and moderate ventilation. For club runs, daily mileage, or treadmill sessions, D4s are dependable and usually come in a few different inseam lengths so you can choose how much coverage you prefer. Think of them as the all-rounder in your running wardrobe.

The North Face Limitless Run Short

The North Face Limitless Run Short is engineered for longer efforts and variable terrain. It tends to feature a slightly longer inseam for extra coverage, tough outer fabric for protection against brush on trails, and a thoughtful pocket layout for gels or a phone. If your runs venture off pavement into singletrack, these shorts offer durability and comfort so you don’t have to worry about snags or chafing mid-run.

Adidas Saturday Shorts

Adidas Saturday shorts blend style and performance, making them suitable for post-run coffee as much as for the run itself. They usually have a relaxed fit, soft fabric, and practical pockets. If you’re after a short that transitions from run to daily life without a wardrobe change, the Saturday shorts are a smart pick—comfortable enough for miles, presentable enough for the street.

Endurance Sesto Black Running Shorts

Endurance Sesto Black running shorts are a budget-conscious option that still delivers core features: moisture-wicking fabric, a secure waistband, and a practical pocket setup. For runners who want performance without the price tag, Endurance models often provide surprising durability and comfort. They’re great for beginners or anyone who wants a dependable backup pair for weekly runs.

Craft Joy Shorts

Craft Joy shorts prioritize comfort and lightness. Known for quality Scandinavian sportswear, Craft focuses on breathable materials and ergonomic cuts. Joy shorts are a solid choice for daily mileage where comfort and simple, unfussy design matter. They pair well with a good base layer if you’re doing chilly early-morning runs.

North Bend Durban Short Running Tights

North Bend Durban combines the snug fit of tights with the freedom of shorts, giving you a hybrid option that works well in spring and fall. These ‘short running tights’ typically have compression-like panels and a sleek silhouette, which helps reduce chafe and gives light muscle support. They’re great when temperatures are variable and you want some coverage without a full tight.

Endurance Tarja Shorts

The Endurance Tarja shorts are another wallet-friendly choice oriented to comfort and fit. They usually come with a soft liner and weather-resistant outer material, making them versatile across seasons. Think of Tarja as the everyday dependable short that won’t complain if you add distance or tempo sessions to your week.

Endurance Letic Shorts

Endurance Letic shorts emphasize stretch and mobility, so they’re a good match for dynamic training that includes drills, strides, and strength moves. They typically include a secure waistband and flat seams to reduce irritation. If your running workouts mix in high-knee drills or quick direction changes, Letic shorts help keep fabric out of the way so movement feels natural.

How to choose the right inseam: 3-inch, 5-inch, or longer?

Inseam length changes how shorts feel on the run. A 3-inch inseam—like the Under Armour Fly By Elite—sits high on the thigh and is perfect for speed and hot weather. A 5-inch or 7-inch inseam offers more coverage and is better for longer runs or chillier days. Ask yourself: do you want freedom or protection? Shorter inseams feel faster, longer ones feel safer and warmer. Try a couple of lengths to find what matches your stride and modesty level.

Compression vs. loose-fit: pros and cons

Compression shorts (Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort style) fit tight and can improve circulation, reduce bounce, and help with muscle fatigue during intense efforts. Loose-fit shorts provide airflow and a relaxed feel—great for recovery runs and higher-mileage days. Many runners use both: compression for interval sessions and races, looser shorts for long, easy miles. It’s like having a toolbox: different jobs need different tools.

Key materials and tech to watch for

Fabric tech makes a huge difference. Look for moisture-wicking blends that move sweat away from the skin, breathable mesh panels for ventilation, and four-way stretch for unrestricted movement. Anti-odor treatments and quick-dry finishes are bonus features for hot-weather or back-to-back run days. Durable fabrics matter on trails; lightweight fabrics work better on roads and tracks. Pockets with secure zippers or hidden slots are great for keys, gels, or a compact phone.

Pockets, liners, and practical features

How you store essentials matters. Small zip pockets are perfect for keys and cards, while a larger rear pocket can hold a small phone. Inner briefs or liners reduce chafe and add support—look for flat seams. Adjustable waistbands and drawcords help fine-tune fit, and reflective trim improves visibility if you run early or late. Consider which features matter most to you: a minimal racer might only want a small gel pocket, while a trail runner needs more storage.

Care and maintenance: make your shorts last

Simple care extends the life of your shorts. Wash in cool water, avoid fabric softeners that clog moisture-wicking finishes, and air-dry when possible. For compression garments, avoid tumble-drying on high heat—heat can break down elastane over time. Treat stains promptly if you run on muddy trails, and check for zipper snags or seam wear after longer seasons. Think of maintenance as tuning; small habits keep your gear performing mile after mile.

Best shorts by running type

Different runs benefit from different shorts. For speedwork: lean toward 3-inch options and compression pieces that minimize excess fabric. For long runs: choose breathable, slightly longer inseams with pockets and a secure waistband. For trails: prioritize durable fabric and secure storage. For gym and cross-training: a flexible short like the Endurance Letic or Craft Joy works well. Matching shorts to the activity keeps you comfortable and focused on training, not adjusting fabric.

Speed and intervals

Pick the Under Armour Fly By Elite 3-inch or Salomon Exo Kort for intervals. They minimize weight and friction so you can concentrate on cadence and power.

Long runs and marathon training

The North Face Limitless and Adidas D4s give coverage, storage, and comfort for longer efforts. Look for a snug waistband and liner to avoid chafe over miles.

Trail running

The Limitless Run Short shines on trails thanks to tougher fabric and pocket layouts. Add a pair of durable, slightly longer shorts if you expect brush or longer days on the trail.

Daily training and gym work

For everyday runs and gym sessions, Adidas Saturday, Endurance models, or Craft Joy balance comfort and utility without breaking the bank.

Budget-friendly alternatives that still perform

Not everyone wants to spend top dollar on running gear. Brands like Endurance and North Bend offer high-value alternatives that borrow from premium design principles—secure waistbands, moisture-wicking fabric, and useful pockets—at friendlier prices. These are excellent for beginners or as backup pairs when you want to rotate gear to extend the life of pricier shorts.

Final recommendations: what to buy depending on your goals

If you race often or do a lot of speedwork, invest in at least one pair of compression shorts like the Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort and a 3-inch racer like the Under Armour Fly By Elite. If you’re training for longer distances or hit mixed terrain, prioritize The North Face Limitless Run Short or Adidas D4s for durability and pockets. For everyday versatility, Adidas Saturday or Craft Joy give comfort and style. And if budget matters, Endurance models cover the essentials without compromise.

Try before you commit: fitting tips

Try shorts with the underwear and shoes you usually wear for running. Do a quick movement test: lunge, sprint for 20 to 30 yards, and simulate a few jumps to check for chafe or bunching. Make sure the waistband stays put when you shake it out—nothing ruins a run faster than constant re-adjusting. If shopping online, check return-friendly retailers and size guides; inseam lengths and fit vary between brands.

Wrap-up: how to build a shorts rotation

Building a rotation keeps each pair fresher and reduces wear. Aim for at least three types: a short inseam for speed, a mid-length for daily training, and a durable option for trails or bad weather. Rotate by run type and wash quickly to maintain fabric performance. With a thoughtful mix, you’ll be ready for any session—track, trail, tempo, or recovery.

Conclusion

Choosing the right men’s running shorts comes down to matching fit, fabric, and features to your specific runs. Whether you favor the locked-in support of the Salomon S/Lab Exo Kort, the freedom of the Under Armour Fly By Elite 3-inch, the versatile Adidas D4s, or the trail-friendly North Face Limitless Run Short, there’s a perfect pair out there for every runner. Factor in inseam, pocket needs, and material tech, and you’ll find shorts that let your legs do the talking on race day and recovery day alike. Happy running—may your stride be light and your shorts chafe-free.
