What is the best inseam length for versatile swim shorts?

For most men, a 7 to 9-inch inseam offers the best balance between coverage and mobility. It sits just above the knee and works for beaches, pools, and casual water sports without being too long or too short.

Do UV-protective swimwear sets replace sunscreen?

UV-protective swimwear provides strong additional protection for covered areas, but it doesn’t eliminate the need for sunscreen on exposed skin like the face, hands, and lower legs. Use both for long sessions in the sun, especially when temperatures climb above 80°F or reflective surfaces increase exposure.

How should I care for swimwear to make it last?

Rinse your swimwear in cool fresh water after each use, avoid wringing, and lay it flat in the shade to dry. Skip machine drying and high heat, and store suits flat or rolled to prevent stretching. This simple routine extends life and keeps colors vibrant.

Are one-size crinkled swim skirts a good travel option?

Yes—one-size crinkled swim skirts are lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and quick to dry, making them ideal for travel. They’re easy to pack, adapt to different body shapes, and work well for casual beach days or as a cover-up after swimming.

Which swimwear is best for lap swimming and training?

For lap swimming, streamlined options like jammers or swim briefs are best because they reduce drag and allow full range of motion. Look for snug, chlorine-resistant fabrics that maintain shape after repeated use.

Ultimate Guide to Men’s Swimwear: From UV-Protective Sets to Crinkled Swim Skirts

Why Choosing the Right Swimwear Matters

Picking swimwear isn't just about colors and logos—it's about comfort, protection, and confidence. Whether you’re heading to a sandy beach, diving into a pool, or lounging by a backyard splash zone, the right pair of swim shorts or a UV-protective swimwear set can make the difference between an awkward afternoon and a great one. Think of swimwear as the suit you wear to a water-friendly party: it should fit your style, protect your skin, and move with you like a good partner on a dance floor.

Popular Styles: Swim Shorts, Trunks, and Boardshorts

Swim Shorts: The Everyday Champion

Swim shorts are the most versatile option for most guys. They come in many lengths—typically 5 to 11 inches in inseam—and are perfect for everything from splashing in shallow water to grabbing a post-swim snack. Look for quick-dry fabrics and a mesh liner if you want extra support. If you prefer a classic silhouette, aim for a mid-length with an inseam around 7 to 9 inches; it sits just above the knee and flatters most body types.

Swim Trunks vs. Boardshorts

Swim trunks usually include an elastic waistband, drawcord, and brief-style liner, making them easy to wear and quick to dry. Boardshorts, on the other hand, are longer—often 9 to 11 inches inseam—and designed for active water sports like surfing. They lack a liner to prevent chafing during long paddles and typically have a sturdier waistband. Choose trunks for casual pool time and boardshorts for beach days where you might catch a wave.

Swimwear Sets with UV Protection

What Is UV Protection in Swimwear?

Clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is engineered to reduce the amount of UV radiation that reaches your skin. A swimwear set with UV protection combines a top—often a rash guard or swim tee—and bottoms that together shield exposed areas. These sets can block a high percentage of UVA and UVB rays, which is handy when you’ll be outdoors for hours and want a backup to sunscreen.

Who Should Consider UV-Protective Sets?

If you’re fair-skinned, prone to burning, or spending all day near reflective surfaces like sand or water, a UV-protective swimwear set is a smart pick. Surfers, paddleboarders, parents with young kids, and anyone who prefers extra coverage can benefit from these sets. They also work well for travel because they act like a lightweight top that can double as a casual tee—saving space in backpacks when you’re limited to carry-on luggage measured in inches and pounds.

Swim Skirts and One-Size Crinkled Options

Swim Skirt Styles for Comfort and Coverage

Swim skirts are a growing category of beachwear that blend swim bottoms with a skirt overlay for modesty and style. They often have a built-in brief or shorts and can be found in varying lengths. One-size crinkled swim skirts offer stretch, flow, and easy packing—perfect when you want a relaxed beach look without fussing over exact measurements. The crinkle fabric hides wrinkles and dries quickly, making it ideal for travel or long beach days.

Is a One-Size Skirt Right for Men?

While swim skirts are traditionally marketed to women, many designers and brands now offer gender-neutral or men-friendly versions geared toward comfort and practical coverage. If you like added freedom and a lightweight feel, a one-size crinkled swim skirt can be a surprisingly stylish choice, especially for pool parties or casual seaside strolls. Just check the waistband and internal brief for a secure fit measured in inches around the waist.

Specialist Swimwear: Jammers, Briefs, and Rash Guards

Racing Jammers and Competitive Trunks

For lap swimmers and competitors, jammers provide a streamlined option that reduces drag. These typically extend to the knee or slightly above and fit snugly like cycling shorts. Most jammers are made from performance fabrics that resist chlorine and sit tight against the skin. If you swim for fitness, invest in a pair that feels like a second skin and avoid baggier swim shorts that create resistance in the water.

Swim Briefs: Minimalist and Functional

Swim briefs are the go-to for swimmers who want maximum mobility. They offer minimal coverage but exceptional Freedom Of Movement—think of them as the sprinting shoes of swimwear. Briefs work well under boardshorts or on their own in a lap pool, and they come in a wide range of waist sizes in inches for a more precise fit. If speed and low drag are priorities, briefs are worth trying.

Rash Guards and UV Tops

Rash guards are thin, tight-fitting tops designed to prevent chafing and deliver sun protection. A short-sleeve rash guard paired with swim shorts or trunks creates a balanced look while protecting shoulders and upper arms. They’re invaluable for surfers, kayakers, and anyone who spends long hours under the sun—plus they double as a casual top for post-swim coffee runs.

Materials and Fabric Technology

Quick-Dry Fabrics and Chlorine Resistance

Modern swimwear uses blends like polyester and elastane to combine stretch and durability. Quick-dry fabrics wick moisture and evaporate water faster, so you won’t be sitting on a wet towel for long. If you'll be swimming frequently in pools, look for chlorine-resistant fabrics—these keep colors bright and fibers intact longer than standard blends. Some performance fabrics will list their weight in ounces per square yard, but generally a lightweight feel is best for comfort.

Comfort Features: Liners, Mesh, and Waistbands

Look for swim shorts with a soft mesh liner if you want added support, or choose lined trunks for extra coverage and comfort. Elastic waistbands with drawcords help you fine-tune the fit in inches around the waist, and zip or velcro pockets are useful if you need to stash small items while changing. For active use, sealed seams and flatlock stitching reduce chafing and improve longevity.

Fit, Sizing, and How to Measure

Measuring Your Waist and Choosing Length

Find your best fit by measuring your waist around the narrowest part—typically above the belly button—and using that number in inches to choose swimwear. For inseam length, decide how much leg you want exposed: a 5-inch inseam gives a sporty short look, 7 to 9 inches is a classic mid-length, and 10 to 11 inches leans toward a boardshort style. Remember that liners and fabric stretch can alter how a piece fits once it’s wet, so try to account for that when selecting your size.

How Tight Is Too Tight?

Your swimwear should be snug but not painful. If you notice red marks or restricted movement, it’s likely too tight. Likewise, excessive looseness can create drag in the water or lead to wardrobe malfunctions during active play. Use the drawcord and elastic adjustments to fine-tune, and when in doubt, choose the size that allows for one to two inches of comfortable give around the waist.

Care and Maintenance: Keep Your Swimwear Lasting Longer

Rinse, Dry, and Store the Right Way

Salt and chlorine are the silent enemies of swim fabrics. After every swim, rinse your swimwear in cool fresh water to remove residue. Gently squeeze out extra moisture—don’t wring—and lay flat to dry in the shade to prevent fading and heat damage. Avoid machine drying or ironing; most swim fabrics can be damaged by high heat. Fold and store pieces flat or rolled for travel so they retain shape and lightweight fabrics don’t snag.

When to Replace Swimwear

Noticeable fading, loss of elasticity, or thinning fabric means it’s time to replace a piece. For active swimmers, many recommend swapping out training suits every six months to a year depending on frequency of use. Leisure swimwear can last longer with careful care—treat it like a favorite t-shirt and it will repay you with seasons of reliable wear.

Accessories That Elevate Your Beach Game

Essential Add-Ons: Goggles, Sandals, and Hats

Accessories turn good swimwear into a complete kit. A comfortable pair of water sandals protects feet from hot sand and rocky shores, while polarized goggles improve sightlines for open-water swims by reducing glare. Wide-brimmed hats and UV-rated sunglasses add protection and style. Think of these as the finishing touches that make your swim setup both functional and photo-ready.

Beach Towels, Bags, and Quick-Dry Gear

A compact, quick-dry towel in inches small enough to fit in a pack will save space and dry faster than traditional terry cloth. Waterproof dry bags help keep valuables safe and separated from wet gear, and zippered swim shorts pockets or small pouches can keep keys secure while you swim. The right bag can make trips to the pool or beach feel organized and breezy.

How to Choose Swimwear for Your Body Type

Shorter Torsos and Taller Frames

If you have a shorter torso, choose swim shorts with a mid-rise and shorter inseam—around 5 to 7 inches—to help balance proportions. Taller frames typically suit longer boardshorts with a 9 to 11-inch inseam. Vertical stripes or solid dark colors can lengthen the appearance of the torso, while waistbands and patterns can break up broad frames for a more tailored look.

Broader Shoulders and Larger Midsections

Broad shoulders look great in rash guards and swim tees that highlight the upper body, while men with larger midsections may prefer darker colors and structured trunks with supportive liners. High-rise options and elastic waistbands with a secure drawcord help keep everything in place, and motion-friendly fabrics prevent pinching and discomfort during active swims.

Where to Compare Prices and Find Deals

How to Shop Smart

Comparing prices across multiple retailers is the best way to find the right balance of quality and value. Look for seasonal sales—late summer often brings clearance on swimwear—and use filters to sort by feature such as UPF rating, inseam length in inches, fabric type, and customer reviews. Don’t forget to check for free size charts and measurement guides so you can match your waist and inseam precisely without guesswork.

Trying Before You Buy vs. Online Convenience

Trying on halves and samples in-store helps with fit, but buying online opens up a much wider selection of styles like the one-size crinkled swim skirts or specialized jammers. If you’re ordering online, read return and exchange terms carefully and take note of sizing charts to reduce the need for returns. When a listing includes model height and the waist measurement in inches, you can better predict how it will sit on your body.

Conclusion

Choosing the perfect swimwear means balancing function, fit, and personal style. From everyday swim shorts and UV-protective sets to niche pieces like jammers and crinkled swim skirts, there’s a water-ready option for every activity and body type. Focus on materials that dry quickly and resist chlorine, check waist and inseam measurements in inches for a better fit, and don’t underestimate accessories like rash guards and water sandals. With the right approach, you’ll find swimwear that keeps you comfortable, protected, and confident every time you hit the water.
