What ball size should adult men use in team handball?

Adult men typically use size 3 balls, which have a circumference around 23 to 23.6 inches and weigh roughly 15–17 ounces. This size supports full-power shots and stability in flight.

How often should I replace a handball?

Replacement depends on frequency and intensity of use. A well-maintained match ball used sparingly can last many seasons, but training balls used several times per week may need replacing every 6–12 months. Watch for loss of grip, visible wear, or inconsistent bounce as signs it’s time for a new one.

Are handball shoes different from volleyball or other court shoes?

Yes; while there’s overlap, handball shoes prioritize lateral stability for quick side-to-side movement, plus cushioning for aggressive landings. Volleyball shoes often focus more on vertical jump support. For the best performance, choose shoes specifically designed for indoor court sports and try them on to ensure they suit your movement style.

Can I use a handball outdoors?

Standard indoor handballs aren’t designed for rough outdoor surfaces; they wear out quickly if used on tarmac or concrete. If you plan outdoor play, buy a ball labeled for outdoor or training use—these use tougher materials to resist abrasion.

What’s the ideal inflation pressure for a handball?

Most indoor handballs perform best between about 6 and 9 psi. The exact recommendation will be printed by the manufacturer—stick to that range, use a needle pump with a gauge, and avoid over-inflating to prevent damage.

Discover Incredible Team Handball Gear and Deals in the UK: Your Ultimate Buyer’s Guide

Introduction: Why this guide matters

If you love the rush of a fast break or the adrenaline of a last-second save, you know team handball is as much about skill as it is about the right gear. Whether you’re hunting for a match-quality ball, sticky indoor shoes, or a new goalkeeper kit, this guide walks you through the essentials, practical buying tips, and how to spot the best deals available in the UK. Think of it as your one-stop playbook for smarter purchases—without the jargon.

Why choosing the right handball equipment makes a difference

Buying cheap gear might seem tempting, but the wrong ball, shoe, or protective item can cost you performance and comfort. The right equipment improves grip, accuracy, footwork, and injury prevention. Imagine trying to play on slippery indoor floors with worn-out soles—your movement becomes clumsy and you lose precious split seconds. Conversely, the right kit feels like an extension of your body: you notice the difference almost immediately.

Handball balls: sizes, materials, and how to pick

The ball is the heart of the game. Choosing the right size, material, and construction will affect handling, bounce, and durability. Below I’ll break down size guidelines, what materials to prioritize, and how to care for your ball so it lasts season after season.

Size guide (inches and ounces)

Handball balls come in sizes tailored to age and gender. For adults, size 3 is the standard for men and larger senior play, with a circumference around 23 to 23.6 inches and a weight roughly between 15 and 17 ounces (about 0.94–1.05 lb). Women and older youth typically use size 2, with a circumference near 21.3 to 22 inches and weighing about 11.5–13.2 ounces. For younger kids, size 1 measures about 19.7 to 20.5 inches in circumference and weighs even less. Picking the correct size improves control and shot power.

Material and grip: synthetic leather vs composite

Indoor match balls are usually made from high-grade synthetic leather or composite materials that offer a tacky surface for better grip. Training balls sometimes use more durable composites to withstand repeated use. If you sweat a lot, look for a ball with enhanced grip technology or tacky coating—it's like having sticky gloves for your hands. Brand names like Select, Molten, Kempa and Hummel have proven options for both match and training balls.

Pressure and inflation (psi)

Inflation affects feel and flight. Most indoor handballs perform best inflated to roughly 6–9 psi. Too soft and the ball flops out of your hand; too hard and it feels like a rock. Always check the manufacturer’s recommended psi—inflate carefully with a needle pump and store the ball away from direct heat to prevent pressure changes.

Shoes: traction, cushioning, and finding the right fit

Shoes are arguably the most personal piece of kit. Handball requires explosive lateral movements, sudden stops, and quick pivots—your shoes must offer grip, cushioning, and ankle support without feeling heavy. Look for court shoes designed for indoor sports: lightweight midsoles, gum rubber outsoles for traction on wooden or synthetic floors, and reinforced sidewalls for lateral stability.

Key shoe features to look for

Prioritize a snug heel fit to prevent slipping, a roomy toe box for quick sprints, and responsive cushioning for shock absorption. A non-marking gum rubber sole is essential for indoor courts. Brands such as Mizuno, Adidas, and Kempa specialize in court-specific shoes; some models even include midfoot shanks for torsional stability—which is great if you make sharp cuts often.

Goalkeeper equipment: protection and mobility

Goalkeepers have a unique kit: they need padding to absorb shots and enough Freedom Of Movement to dive and react. Padded pants, long-sleeve padded jerseys, and sometimes knee and elbow protection are common. Although gloves aren’t always standard for handball goalkeepers, some prefer thin, tacky gloves to improve grip on slick shots.

Padded pants, jerseys, and optional gloves

Padded pants protect hips and thighs during dives; breathable fabrics keep you cool between saves. Long-sleeve jerseys with reinforced elbows help against abrasion. If you choose gloves, go for slim-fitting ones that enhance grip without adding bulk—think of them as a traction boost rather than a giant batting glove.

Training vs match balls and useful accessories

Training balls are typically more durable and slightly less tacky than match balls. If your club trains multiple times a week, investing in dedicated training balls is smart—they last longer and save match balls for competition. Accessories to consider include pumps with pressure gauges, spare needles, storage bags, and tape for minor repairs. A basic pump and gauge will keep balls at optimum psi and is a small but essential investment.

Goals, nets, and court essentials

If you’re organizing sessions or setting up a recreational facility, knowing the standard dimensions helps. A standard indoor team handball court measures roughly 131.2 feet long by 65.6 feet wide. Goals are about 6.56 feet high by 9.84 feet wide, and the 6-meter zone—commonly called the crease—is approximately 19.7 feet from the goal line. Portable goals are available in collapsible configurations for multi-use halls; choose sturdy frames and tightly woven nets that minimize rebound unpredictability.

Protective gear: knee pads, ankle supports, and taping

Handball is physical—dives, landings, and collisions happen. Knee pads designed for court sports reduce impact from slides and falls, while ankle braces or preventative taping stabilize joints if you have a history of sprains. Compression sleeves for calves and thighs can aid recovery after tough sessions. Think of protective gear as insurance: you hope you won’t need it, but you’ll be glad it’s there when things get intense.

Top brands and recommended products

Several brands dominate the handball scene. Select makes top-tier match balls and has long been a favorite across Europe. Molten is known for reliable construction and excellent grip. Hummel and Kempa build full ranges from apparel to shoes and goalkeeper gear, often used by clubs. Mizuno and Adidas produce durable court shoes tailored to fast indoor sports. Price ranges vary: entry-level training balls and basic shoes can start around the equivalent of a budget-friendly price, while match-grade balls and specialist shoes rise to mid-range or premium levels. Comparing features and trying shoes on in person when possible usually yields the best results.

How to compare deals and get the best savings in the UK

With so many sellers, comparison tools and reputable sports retailers make it easier to spot real bargains. Look for verified reviews, check for authentic product certifications, and watch for seasonal sales around back-to-school and winter. Don’t be swayed by flashy discounts—make sure the item is the right model for your needs. When possible, test shoes in a store or check return-friendly retailers in case sizing differs from what you expect.

Budget picks vs premium investments: what to prioritize

If you’re on a budget, prioritize shoes and a proper indoor ball—those two items affect play most directly. Protective gear like knee pads and ankle braces can be mid-range and still effective. Save premium investments for items you’ll use repeatedly: a high-quality match ball or a robust pair of shoes will pay off over seasons. Think of it like building a strong foundation: invest in what supports your performance first.

Maintenance tips to extend the life of your gear

Good care keeps things looking and performing better for longer. Wipe down balls after use to remove sweat and dust, store them at moderate room temperature to preserve pressure, and rotate shoes so soles wear more evenly. Wash jerseys on a gentle cycle and air-dry to keep colours and fabrics intact. Small habits like checking inflation before each session and replacing worn sole treads promptly make a surprising difference.

Where to try before you buy and local resources

Club mates and coaches are often the best advisors—ask for the models they use and why. Local sports halls, specialist indoor stores, and club shops let you try on shoes and sometimes test balls. If you’re shopping online, read site policies and customer images carefully to avoid model confusion. Comparison sites can help locate stock across retailers and reveal price trends, but always confirm specs directly on manufacturer pages if you need exact details.

Final thoughts before you hit purchase

Buying handball gear blends personal preference with practical needs. Prioritize fit, grip, and support. Think seasonally—do you need more training balls for heavy use or a few match balls to rotate? Use comparison tools to spot deals but trust your own hands-on tests for critical items like shoes. The right choices will help you play harder, move faster, and last longer on the court—so shop smart and enjoy the game.

Conclusion: Investing a little time in choosing the right ball, shoes, and protective gear pays off big on performance and comfort. Whether you’re equipping a whole team or upgrading your personal kit, focus on fit and function first, then hunt for value. Keep your gear maintained, and it will reward you with seasons of dependable play.
