What is the difference between nylon and dyneema webbing?

Nylon stretches a bit and resists heat and repeated abrasion well; it’s a good all-around choice for anchors. Dyneema is much lighter for the same strength and stretches very little, which saves weight but transmits more force in a shock. Choose nylon for shock absorption and dyneema for weight savings.

How often should I retire climbing slings?

Retire slings immediately if you see cuts, frays, soft spots, or damaged stitching. For routine use, consider replacing light-use slings after about five years and sooner for heavily used gear. Always err on the side of safety—replace questionable webbing.

Can I tie knots in sewn slings to shorten them?

It’s not recommended. Knots can reduce the strength of a sewn sling and create stress points. Instead, carry the appropriate sling lengths or use purpose-made adjustable personal anchors designed for that use.

What sling lengths should a beginner carry?

For a versatile beginner rack, bring several 2-foot and 4-foot slings plus one 12-foot sling for complex anchors. That mix covers most sport and trad needs without adding too much weight.

Is tubular webbing better than flat webbing for climbing?

Yes—tubular webbing is generally better for climbing because it knots well, is flexible, and handles carabiner clipping smoothly. Flat webbing is more common in industrial settings and tends to be stiffer and less knot-friendly.

Essential Guide to Climbing Webbing: Choose the Right Slings, Runners, and Anchors

Introduction: Why climbing webbing matters

Climbing webbing might look like just a strip of fabric, but it's one of the quiet heroes of any climb. Whether you're building a trad anchor, extending a quickdraw, or setting up a top-rope, the right sling or runner can make your day safer and smoother. In this guide I’ll walk you through the types, sizes, strengths, and best uses for climbing webbing, using plain language and real-world advice so you can make confident choices on the crag or at the gym.

Types of climbing webbing

Not all webbing is created equal. Webbing comes in different materials and constructions, and each has strengths and trade-offs. Two materials you’ll hear about most are nylon and dyneema. Beyond materials, webbing can be tubular or flat, sewn into permanent slings, or sold by the yard for custom setups. Knowing the differences helps you pick the right tool for the job instead of guessing and hoping.

Nylon webbing: stretch, durability, and all-around use

Nylon is the traditional choice for climbing slings. It offers a bit of stretch, which can absorb shock in a fall, and it handles repeated abrasion relatively well. Most sewn nylon slings are rated around 4,000 to 5,000 pounds breaking strength, which is more than enough for typical climbing loads. If you want a forgiving, reliable sling for anchors, trad protection, or long alpine routes, nylon is a safe bet. It tolerates heat from friction better than some alternatives and performs predictably when loaded.

Dyneema (UHMWPE) webbing: light and strong, with trade-offs

Dyneema, also called UHMWPE, is a high-strength, low-stretch fiber used in modern slings and runners. It’s noticeably lighter than nylon for the same breaking strength, so it’s popular where every ounce counts—think long approaches or multi-pitch trad. Dyneema slings often boast strengths similar to nylon, in the 4,000 to 5,000 pound range, while being thinner and lighter. The trade-offs are less stretch (so more force is transmitted in a shock) and sensitivity to heat and UV over time. For racking cams or building anchors where weight matters, dyneema is a top choice.

Construction types: tubular, flat, and sewn webbing

Construction affects how webbing handles knots, friction, and wear. Tubular webbing has a hollow core and is flexible, making it easy to knot and comfortable to handle. Flat webbing is often stiffer and used more in industrial settings, while sewn slings are factory-finished pieces designed for climbing with a sewn eye and certified strength rating. Choosing the right construction keeps your setup tidy and reliable.

Tubular webbing: versatility and knot friendliness

Tubular webbing is the common choice for climbers. It feels soft in your hands, cinches well if you need to tie a water knot, and is easy to clip through carabiners without twisting. Tubular nylon is the classic sling material; tubular dyneema exists too but can be slipperier and less knot-holding. If you ever anticipate tying slings or using the webbing as a personal anchor, tubular materials are easier to work with.

Sewn slings and runners: ready-to-use safety

Sewn slings and dogbone-style runners come factory-sewn with certified stitching and strength ratings, so you don’t have to sew or improvise. They’re sold in standard lengths—commonly 1 foot, 2 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet, and 12 feet—and typical strength ratings sit around 4,500 pounds. For most climbers, buying pre-sewn slings is the smart option: they save time, reduce error, and are tested for climbing loads.

Common sizes and strength ratings (in imperial units)

Knowing common lengths and widths helps you build a rack that fits your climbing style. In the U.S. and UK climbing markets you’ll often see slings in lengths like 2 feet, 4 feet, 6 feet, and 12 feet. Widths typically measure around 1 inch or 3/4 inch. Strength ratings for climbing slings are usually given in pounds; a standard sewn sling might be rated around 4,500 to 5,000 pounds. These figures provide a clear margin above what a human-weight fall would generate in normal circumstances.

Typical sling sizes and their uses

A 2-foot sling is great for equalizing a single piece or extending a quickdraw. A 4-foot sling is often used for anchor construction and extending protection to reduce rope drag. A 6-foot or 12-foot sling becomes handy for complex anchors, wrapping around features, or building multi-point equalizations. Choose lengths that match your usual routes—shorter for sport and gym, longer for trad and mountaineering.

Practical uses: how climbers employ webbing in the field

Webbing is a multipurpose tool: slings, runners, anchors, personal tethering, and even emergency rescue. The critical thing is using the right type for the task. For example, a lightweight dyneema runner might be perfect for reducing rack weight on long trad routes, but you’ll want a nylon sling for building a shock-absorbing anchor on a tricky lead. Let’s break down common uses so you can match form to function.

Extending protection and quickdraws

Extending protection with webbing or a runner minimizes rope drag and improves rope alignment. A 1-foot or 2-foot runner between a cam and quickdraw gives the piece a chance to sit properly in the rock, reducing the chance of it walking out. Because these short runners see repeated loading, choose highly abrasion-resistant webbing and inspect it often.

Anchors, equalization, and master points

For anchors, climbers commonly build a master point using two or three slings and a locking carabiner. Nylon slings are often preferred here because their slight stretch helps absorb shock if an anchor is caught by a fall. When equalizing multiple pieces, use lengths that let you make tidy knots and leave minimal tail to prevent snagging. The goal is a robust, redundant system that centers your load.

Via ferrata and personal anchors

Via ferrata setups and personal anchor systems often use dedicated webbing loops or pre-made adjustable tethers. These are designed for easy clipping and unclipping while keeping you safely attached. For via ferrata, specialized lanyards with energy absorbers are used; do not substitute ordinary climbing slings for these, as they won’t manage impact forces correctly.

Choosing the right webbing for your discipline

Your type of climbing—sport, trad, alpine, or gym—should guide webbing choices. Sport climbers prioritize simplicity and may favor a handful of quickdraw extenders and shorter slings, while trad climbers carry a mix of short and long runners to manage a variety of placements. Alpinists lean toward lighter dyneema options for weight savings, while rescue teams select highly durable materials and specific connector hardware. Think about what you place most frequently and pack accordingly.

Sport and gym climbing: keep it simple

If you climb mostly sport routes or indoors, a few 2-foot and 4-foot slings and a couple of sewn dyneema runners will cover most needs. Sport climbing focuses on clipping and quick transitions, so you don’t need long anchor-building webbing. Still, always carry a couple of sewn slings for unexpected anchor work or lowering off a top-rope set-up.

Trad and alpine: variety and redundancy

Trad climbing benefits from a wider selection—multiple 2-foot, 4-foot, and 6-foot slings, plus a couple of 12-foot runners for complex anchors. Having both nylon and dyneema lets you balance weight and shock absorption. In alpine settings where every ounce matters, favor lightweight dyneema while ensuring you have at least one nylon sling for any potential shock-absorbing anchor needs.

Care, inspection, and retirement of webbing

Your webbing won’t last forever, and inspecting it regularly can prevent a bad day from becoming worse. Check slings for cuts, frays, discoloration, and soft spots. If the weave looks crushed, if stitching is failing, or if there’s exposed core fiber, retire the sling immediately. Heat, friction, and chemical exposure all degrade webbing. When in doubt, replace it. The cost of a new sling is small compared to the risk of failure.

Daily checks and periodic retirement guidelines

Do a quick visual and tactile check before each outing. Feel across the width of the sling for inconsistencies and run your fingers along seams to check stitching. As a simple rule, retire webbing that shows obvious damage or that has been involved in a significant fall where the webbing caught the brunt of the force. For light-use slings left in a pack for years, consider replacing them after five years, and sooner if used heavily.

Buying tips: what to look for and what to avoid

When shopping, prioritize reputable climbing-specific brands and products that show certified strength ratings in pounds. Avoid generic nylon webbing sold for decor or industrial straps that aren’t rated for climbing loads. Look for sewn slings with neat, robust stitching, clear labeling of length and strength, and materials that match your intended use. If weight matters, compare dyneema and nylon by breaking strength and actual weight per foot to decide what makes sense.

Sample product categories to consider

Instead of focusing on a single brand, consider these categories: sewn nylon slings for anchors, sewn dyneema runners for light weight, adjustable personal anchors for belay stations, daisy chains for aid climbing, and long tubular webbing by the yard for custom anchor needs. Each category serves a specific purpose, so a balanced rack often includes one or two pieces from several categories, rather than many identical slings.

Common mistakes and safety tips

People often underestimate how quickly webbing can be damaged by sharp edges or heat. Avoid dragging slings over sharp rock edges and never run slings around a corner without a protector. Don’t tie knots in sewn slings to shorten them—use the proper-length sling instead. Also, never substitute general-purpose straps or untested cord for certified climbing webbing. When in doubt, replace it with a certified sling; your life is worth a few extra dollars.

Don’t improvise critical gear

Some climbers get creative in a pinch, but improvisation with non-climbing-rated webbing or hardware is risky. Always use gear rated for climbing loads when lives depend on it. If you need a temporary solution to get off the cliff—call for help or retreat rather than rely on makeshift setups. Climbing webbing is inexpensive relative to the consequences of failure.

Final thoughts: build a smarter, safer webbing collection

Climbing webbing is a deceptively simple piece of kit that plays many roles. By understanding material differences, construction types, size options, and proper care, you can tailor a sling and runner collection that fits your climbing style while keeping safety front and center. Buy certified products, inspect them frequently, and don’t be shy about replacing anything that looks compromised—trust your gear like you trust your belayer.

Ready to upgrade your rack? Start by listing the scenarios you most often face—sport leads, trad racks, alpine long days—and then pick a mix of nylon and dyneema slings in 2-foot, 4-foot, and 12-foot lengths. That simple, balanced approach gets you prepared for most situations without carrying unnecessary weight.

Conclusion: Climbing webbing is more than nylon and stitching; it’s the link between you and the rock. Choose wisely, inspect often, and keep your setups neat. With the right slings and runners in your pack, you’ll climb more confidently and safely.
