Go Craft began as a small idea with big heart. Founded in the early 2010s by a group of makers and retailers in the UK, it started as a single shop aiming to bring quality fabrics, haberdashery and paper crafts to a local community that felt neglected by big chains. The founders wanted a place where hobbyists and professionals could find reliable materials, practical advice and a bit of creative company. The store's early days were hands-on: owners stocking shelves, teaching workshops, and listening to what customers actually needed.
Go Craft built its identity around three simple promises: quality materials, friendly expertise and accessibility. Their mission was to make crafting easy and joyful for everyone—from absolute beginners to experienced makers. They focused on sourcing durable products and creating an in-store environment where people felt welcome to try new things. This friendly, no-judgement vibe became central to the brand and the reason many customers came back week after week.
What set Go Craft apart early on was its focus on community. The shop hosted meetups, free demonstrations and classes that encouraged people to share skills. That atmosphere turned the store into more than a retail outlet; it became a maker hub. Local schools and community groups reached out, and Go Craft responded with outreach programs, donation drives and collaborative events. The store didn’t just sell supplies—it fostered connections.
Growth came steadily. After a few successful years in a single location, Go Craft expanded to multiple branches across the UK and launched an online store. The online presence allowed them to reach hobbyists outside their local footprint and introduced features like instructional videos, curated kits and a blog full of projects. Expansion wasn’t reckless. They opened new outlets in towns with active maker communities and kept management close to the store level so the original ethos didn’t get lost.
Go Craft didn’t just grow physically; it evolved its product range with trends. When upcycling and sustainability rose in popularity, they added eco-friendly textiles and secondhand workshops. When paper crafts and planner communities boomed, Go Craft stocked specialty papers and tools. They kept a pulse on social media trends and learned fast—adding or phasing out product lines based on what real customers were doing, not just what vendors pushed.
The store’s shelves are broad yet curated. Go Craft offers fabrics, yarn, dressmaking supplies, art papers, calligraphy tools, knitting kits, cross-stitch kits, and a strong selection of tools and storage solutions. Their kits are especially popular: designed to get a maker from zero to finished project with minimal fuss. Services include pattern alterations, tool rentals, repair workshops and a friendly help desk where staff offer quick guidance.
Staff training is a priority. Employees are makers themselves or trained by makers, which means you get practical, tested advice instead of generic sales talk. Many customers say the staff’s practical tips—like how to choose the right needle or which adhesive works on a tricky surface—saved them hours of frustration. That expertise is a big selling point and a reason the business built such strong word-of-mouth.
Go Craft’s website mirrors the in-store experience: clear categories, project inspiration and step-by-step guides. The digital team invested early in content marketing—tutorials, free patterns, and video demos—which boosted organic traffic and helped position the store as an authority. Their webshop is mobile-friendly, with curated collections and targeted recommendations based on browsing behavior.
On social platforms, Go Craft focuses on sharing user projects, quick tips and behind-the-scenes content. They run seasonal campaigns and hashtag challenges to encourage user-generated content, which helps build trust and free marketing. Importantly, they respond to comments and DMs quickly, keeping that personal feel even as their follower numbers grew. This engagement strategy turned casual followers into loyal customers.
The UK market has several notable craft retailers. Let’s look at how Go Craft compares to some familiar names: Hobbycraft, John Lewis (craft section), independent local shops, and online specialists like Etsy sellers or dedicated online craft stores.
Hobbycraft is a big national chain with large stores and a vast product range. It’s a one-stop shop for beginners and occasional crafters. Go Craft differs by being more curated and personal. Where Hobbycraft excels in variety and price points, Go Craft offers deeper product knowledge, niche supplies, and an emphasis on workshops and community. If you want a bargain on mainstream supplies, Hobbycraft often has the edge. If you want expert help or a niche material, Go Craft is usually better.
John Lewis carries quality brands and has a reputation for customer service, but its craft selection can be limited and targeted to general home projects rather than serious making. Go Craft’s advantage lies in specialization. It stocks tools and materials that hobbyists and professional makers use daily. For everyday lifestyle crafts, John Lewis can be convenient. For dedicated crafting needs and deeper expertise, Go Craft beats John Lewis hands down.
Independent local shops vary wildly. Some are tiny boutiques focusing on knitting or quilting, others specialize in art supplies. Go Craft often sits between a local independent and a national chain: it has the community focus and specialist stock of independents, plus the product breadth and operational systems to support multiple sites. For customers seeking a regional network with consistent quality, Go Craft often wins. For hyper-local, highly specialized products, a small independent might still be the best choice.
Online specialists and marketplaces like Etsy or dedicated online craft shops offer exceptional variety and unique items. They are great for rare materials or handmade tools. However, they lack the immediacy and hands-on help of a physical store. Go Craft combines online convenience with in-person support: you can buy online and pick up in store, join a workshop, or get one-to-one advice. That blended model captures the best of both worlds for many makers.
Why do customers stick with Go Craft? It’s more than products. The store’s loyalty program rewards repeat buyers with discounts and early access to workshops. They maintain a newsletter full of project ideas and seasonal tips—never just sales copy. Importantly, they listen. Customer feedback shapes which brands and classes the store offers. That responsiveness creates a sense of shared ownership among regulars.
Workshops are a cornerstone of Go Craft’s community strategy. Topics range from beginner sewing to advanced leatherwork. The workshops are small, hands-on and affordable. They encourage participants to bring friends, which spreads word-of-mouth. Workshops also serve as a soft intro to more expensive tools and materials—the "try before you buy" effect. Many attendees convert into regular customers after a positive first class.
As makers increasingly demand responsible products, Go Craft made a point of sourcing more sustainable options. They partnered with eco-friendly suppliers and created a line of recycled and low-impact materials. The store also promotes waste reduction through refill stations for certain adhesives and by offering patterns that prioritize efficient fabric use. While not exclusively "green," the store’s steps reflect a pragmatic approach: offer better choices and educate customers without forcing extremes.
Beyond products, Go Craft engages in charitable projects: donating materials to schools, running workshops for disadvantaged groups, and supporting maker-based social enterprises. These efforts strengthen community ties and reflect the company’s original values. It’s a reminder that retail can be both profitable and purposeful.
No business grows without bumps. Go Craft faced supply chain issues, seasonal demand swings, and competition from discount retailers. The pandemic brought a unique challenge—store closures and a sudden surge in demand for home-based craft kits. Go Craft responded by ramping up their online shop, developing documented project kits, and offering virtual classes. Those quick pivots not only kept the business afloat but expanded its audience.
Scaling a local brand risks losing personality. To avoid that, Go Craft deliberately empowered local store managers with buying decisions and event programming. That allowed each location to reflect its community while maintaining overall brand quality. The balance between consistency and local flavor became a competitive advantage.
Looking ahead, Go Craft plans to continue expanding thoughtfully. Expect more digital offerings—interactive patterns, subscription boxes and augmented reality tools that help choose fabrics and colors. They’re also exploring partnerships with educational institutions to integrate crafting skills into vocational training. The goal is steady growth without losing the approachable, maker-friendly soul that started it all.
Go Craft’s story is a reminder that retail can be warm, adaptive and community-driven. The store carved out a niche by combining quality, knowledge and human connection. In a crowded market of chains and online sellers, Go Craft shows how a focused vision and hands-on care create genuine loyalty. It’s a brand that listens, learns and makes room for creativity.
