What size duct should I use for a standard bathroom fan?

Most domestic bathroom fans work well with a roughly 4-inch duct. If your fan has higher airflow or the run is long and involves several bends, consider stepping up to a larger duct to reduce noise and resistance.

Can I mix brass and PVC fittings?

Yes, but you must use appropriate adapters or threaded bushes to transition between materials. Brass provides strong threads; use compatible female bushes or thread converters to ensure a secure, leak-free joint.

How often should I check or clean ducting?

Inspect accessible ducting and inspection points once a year. High-dust or kitchen applications may need cleaning every six months. Installing removable T pieces or access panels makes this task quick and painless.

Are galvanised nipples suitable for outdoor use?

Galvanised steel offers good corrosion resistance and is commonly used outdoors, but in very harsh or coastal environments stainless steel or additional protective coatings may be a better long-term choice.

How do I reduce noise from ventilation ducts?

Minimize sharp bends, use larger-diameter ducts where possible, add dampers or acoustic lining if appropriate, and ensure joints are tightened and sealed. Securing ducts and using foam strips at contact points also reduces vibration and rattle.

Smart Choices for Plumbing Fittings & Supports: A Practical Guide to Connectors, Ducting, Trunking and More

Introduction: Why the right fittings matter

When you’re tackling a plumbing or ventilation job, the parts you choose can make the difference between a neat, long-lasting install and a frustrating patchwork of leaks, rattles and repeated fixes. Whether you’re fitting a bathroom fan duct, routing cables through trunking, or adapting pipe sizes, the right connectors, bushes and conduit will save time and money. In this guide I’ll walk you through popular products—like the Manrose pipe connectors and Falcon trunking items—explain when to use them, and share practical tips so your project goes smoothly.

Understanding materials: PVC, brass and galvanised steel

Why material choice matters

Material determines durability, corrosion resistance and how components fit together. PVC parts are lightweight and resist moisture—great for ducting and ventilation. Brass brings strength and excellent corrosion resistance for threaded joints. Galvanised steel is tough and ideal where mechanical strength is needed, like threaded nipples or converters. Pick the material that matches the environment: damp, outdoor, or inside walls.

Round pipe connectors and dampers: controlling airflow

Manrose 100mm 4 Round Pipe Connector With Damper — what it does

If you’re installing or repairing ductwork for a bathroom fan, a connector with an integrated damper is a handy component. The Manrose 100mm 4 Round Pipe Connector With Damper is made to join multiple runs and prevent backdrafts when the fan is off. In imperial terms, that 100mm diameter is roughly 4 inches, a common size for domestic ventilation. The damper stops cold air and smells from returning, improving efficiency and comfort.

Ducting options: flat channel, round pipe and connectors

Choosing between flat channel and round ducting

Flat channel ducting is perfect where space is tight—think in ceiling voids or shallow cavities—while round ducting usually offers better airflow and is easier to join cleanly. For example, Manrose 2 Metre Flat Channel Ducting (about 6 ft 7 in long) is a convenient solution when you need a low-profile run. If you’re using round runs, the Manrose 120mm round 350mm length PVC pipe (roughly 4.7 inches diameter and 13.8 inches long) and the Manrose 100mm 4 PVC T Piece let you route and split airflow neatly.

Trunking and conduit: protecting cables and organizing runs

Falcon trunking products for tidy installs

Electrical trunking keeps cables organized and protected, especially when routing along walls or through cabinets. Falcon Trunking 25mm Spacer Bar Saddle (a pack of 100) and the Falcon Trunking 25mm to 20mm reducer are great for tidy transitions—25mm is roughly 1 inch, and the reducer helps when you need to step down to a smaller conduit. For long runs where strength is essential, Falcon 25mm heavy gauge round conduit in a long spool (about 295 ft) offers robustness and flexibility for big projects.

Brass bushes, nipples and thread converters: adapting and securing joints

When to use brass bushes and galvanised nipples

Brass bushes like the Male Brass Bush 32mm long (about 1.25 inches long) provide durable threaded joints and resist corrosion, which makes them ideal inside cabinets or where moisture might occur. Unicrimp 25mm brass female bushes (pack of 50) are useful for batch projects—insert them for secure, long-lasting thread repairs or to reinforce softer materials. For metal-to-metal adaptations, a Thread Converter 40mm to 32mm galvanised part helps you adapt sizes—40mm is about 1.6 inches and 32mm is roughly 1.25 inches—while galvanised nipples are the go-to for strong, threaded pipe extensions; a 20mm nipple is around 0.8 inches in diameter, handy for compact connections.

Connectors and pieces that make systems work together

T pieces, T junctions and flat channel connectors

When routing ducting and ventilation, junctions determine how airflow splits and where maintenance access will be. The Manrose 100mm 4 PVC T Piece to connect round ducting lets you distribute airflow to multiple rooms, and the Manrose 225mm flat channel ducting connector (about 8.9 inches across) is perfect for linking flat duct sections. Choosing the right connector reduces turbulence and noise—simple things like a smooth transition or a gentle bend can be the difference between quiet performance and an annoying hum.

Practical installation tips for non-professionals

Tools, sealants and best practices

Don’t overcomplicate things. A few basic tools—tape measure (in inches), a quality hacksaw or PVC cutter, a screwdriver set, and a caulking gun—will cover most installs. Use silicone sealant or HVAC tape on duct joins to prevent leaks. For trunking, secure saddle spacers at regular intervals to prevent sagging; a heavy conduit spool may need support every few feet. Always mark and double-check cuts before you make them—measure twice, cut once still applies in plumbing and trunking.

Sizing and compatibility: avoid costly mistakes

How to pick the right diameter and type

Measure the existing openings and think about flow rates. A 4-inch duct (like the Manrose 100mm models) is common for most domestic fans, but if you’re handling a high airflow fan or a long run, upsizing to a larger round duct will reduce noise and resistance. When adapting parts—say, from a 1.6-inch threaded converter down to 1.25 inches—check thread type and pitch as well as diameter. If in doubt, buy a sample or two and dry-fit components before final assembly.

Durability and cost: balancing upfront spend and long-term performance

Invest where it counts

Cheap parts might save cash now but can cost more in labor and replacements. Spend more on brass bushes and heavy-gauge conduit where wear and corrosion are likely. For interior ducting where moisture isn’t an issue, PVC is economical and easy to work with. Bulk packs—like the Unicrimp 25mm brass female bushes in packs of 50—make sense if you have multiple fixtures or expect future repairs. Think of fittings as the foundation: a slightly better elbow or connector keeps everything aligned and lasting longer.

Common problems and how to avoid them

Leaks, rattles and poor airflow—quick fixes

Leaky joints cause energy losses and noise. Use compression seals or a thin bead of silicone for PVC-to-PVC joins, and HVAC tape for round duct seams. For rattles, add a soft foam strip where ducts meet panels, or secure trunking saddles more closely. If airflow is weak, check for excessive bends, overly long runs without boosts, or undersized ducts. Sometimes the fix is swapping a restrictive connector for a smoother, larger one.

Adding extras: when to include dampers, reducers and inspection points

Small parts that make maintenance easy

Dampers prevent backdrafts, reducers allow you to connect dissimilar sizes, and inspection points (removable T pieces or access panels) make cleaning a breeze. Products like integrated-damper connectors are lifesavers in multi-room setups where air could flow the wrong way. If your run is longer than a few yards or goes through dusty areas, plan for access points so you can clean without dismantling the whole system.

Where to use these fittings: room-by-room ideas

Bathrooms, kitchens and utility spaces

Bathrooms often need 4-inch (approx.) ducts, dampers and easy-to-clean T pieces. Kitchens may need larger ducts and heavy-gauge conduit for extractor fans, while utility rooms can benefit from brass bushes and galvanised nipples for robust water or gas connections. Trunking is ideal for hiding cables in living rooms and workshops—use the Falcon 25mm conduit for neat cable management where one-inch trunking is required.

Eco and efficiency considerations

Reducing noise and energy loss

Well-fitted ducting reduces fan workload and energy use. Smoother transitions and fewer bends cut resistance and noise. Insulating long duct runs can prevent temperature loss in ventilation systems that handle warm or cool air. Picking corrosion-resistant materials reduces waste and replacement frequency—small decisions that add up over years.

Summary checklist before you buy

Quick pre-purchase guide

Measure openings in inches, identify thread types, decide on material based on environment, plan for access and support, and buy a couple of spare bushes or converters for flexibility. Bulk packs are worth it if you’re doing several fixtures, and always check compatibility between PVC, brass and galvanised components before committing. A little planning prevents a lot of rework.

Conclusion

Plumbing fittings and supports might not be glamorous, but choosing the right connectors, ducting and trunking is central to a tidy, efficient, and long-lasting install. From the Manrose round pipe connectors with dampers to Falcon trunking and brass bushes, each part plays a role. Measure carefully in inches, pick materials that match the job environment, and think ahead about access and durability. With the right approach you’ll enjoy quieter systems, fewer leaks, and projects that look and work like they were done by a pro.
