If you're training martial arts, collecting gear, or just curious about traditional weapons, choosing the right equipment matters more than you might think. Weapons training sharpens coordination, timing, and distance—skills that improve empty-hand techniques too. Whether you practice karate, kendo, Filipino martial arts, or mixed weapons styles, the right weapon helps you train safely and effectively while reflecting your personal goals and budget.
Before we dig into specific weapons, it's smart to know the core factors that separate a useful tool from an impulse buy. Think about material (wood, rattan, foam, steel), length in inches or feet, weight in pounds, balance, and whether a training version exists. Also, consider where you'll use the weapon—an indoor gym has different needs from backyard practice. Those few details determine durability, safety, and how quickly you progress.
Let's run through the most common martial arts weapons you’ll see in clubs and online—what they’re used for, typical sizes in imperial units, and quick buying tips. I’ll highlight options for beginners, intermediates, and advanced practitioners.
Nunchaku are iconic for a reason. Traditional hardwood nunchaku usually have two handles around 10 to 14 inches long joined by a 3-4 inch cord or chain. Foam or padded training nunchaku are ideal for beginners to learn swings and transitions without the sting. If you want something display-worthy, look for hardwood or molded polycarbonate models that weigh about 0.5 to 1.5 pounds—light enough for speed, heavy enough for control.
The bo is a straight staff commonly used in karate and kobudo. Standard length sits at about 6 to 7 feet, and the ideal weight varies by user, usually in the 1.5 to 3 pound range. Ash wood and rattan are popular for durability; synthetic bo staffs are great when humidity or consistent weight matters. Beginners benefit from a slightly lighter staff, while experienced users often prefer a stiffer, heavier bo for form and contact drills.
A bokken is a wooden practice sword roughly 39 inches long that mimics a katana’s feel without the risk of a sharp edge. This makes it perfect for kata and partner drills. A real katana blade typically measures 27 to 30 inches and should only be owned by experienced practitioners who know local laws and safe handling. Many people train for years with a bokken before moving to a live blade for cutting demonstrations.
Filipino martial arts use paired sticks, usually rattan, at about 26 to 28 inches long and weighing less than a pound each. Rattan is forgiving on impact and resists splintering, making it a staple for stick-riposte drills and disarm techniques. If you’re practicing outdoors or want durability, premium rattan or synthetic sticks are worth the slightly higher price.
These traditional Okinawan weapons are compact but technical. Sai are metal prongs around 12 to 16 inches long used for trapping and striking. Tonfa, about 18 to 24 inches with a perpendicular handle, are excellent for close-range blocks and strikes. Kama are sickle-like tools roughly 12 to 16 inches long—great for pocket drills and precision work. For safety, beginners should start with foam or training versions before moving to metal or hardened wood.
Throwing weapons like shuriken and knives are mostly historical and for display; training-grade foam or rubber throwing tools are recommended for safe practice. If you pursue sport or historical study, consider blunt, balanced practice pieces. Lengths vary widely—throwing items are small, often 3 to 6 inches across—and the priority is safe, consistent weight and edges that won’t cause harm.
If you’re new to weapons, I recommend starting with padded or wooden trainers: bokken, foam nunchaku, lightweight bo staffs, and rattan escrima sticks. These give you correct movement patterns and durability with low injury risk. A starter set often costs less than a specialist piece and lets you test your interest without committing to expensive steel or lacquered collectibles.
For display or demonstrations, people gravitate toward high-quality katana, ornate tonfa, or collector-grade sai and kama. These typically involve polished steel, lacquered wood, or decorative fittings and are heavier and more fragile than training gear. If you want a showpiece, prioritize craftsmanship, balanced weight (often over 2 pounds for swords), and legitimate maker reputations.
Choosing the correct length and weight is like finding the right shoe—you should feel comfortable and controlled. For staffs, aim for a length close to your height (6 to 7 feet is common). For swords and bokken, match blade or wood length to your arm span—typically 27 to 39 inches depending on style. Heavier items give power but slow you down; lighter weapons increase speed but demand precise technique. Test if you can comfortably hold and swing the weapon for several minutes without excess strain.
Weapon training calls for more protective gear than empty-hand classes. Headgear with face cage, padded gloves, chest protectors, and forearm guards reduce impact risks, especially when working with hard timber or contact drills. Shin guards and groin protection are essential too. If you're practicing with partners, eye protection is non-negotiable—always opt for gear that fits snugly and allows full movement.
Take good care of your weapon and it will last years. Wooden weapons benefit from occasional oiling or waxing to prevent drying and splitting—linseed oil is a traditional choice. Rattan should be kept dry and stored flat to avoid warping. Steel swords need oiling to guard against rust; wipe blades after practice and store in a dry place. Regular inspections for cracks, splinters, or loose fittings keep training safe and prevent accidents.
In the UK, weapon laws are strict and vary by type. Items designed as illegal offensive weapons are prohibited to carry in public. Practice weapons used for training are generally acceptable when transported correctly—locked in a case and kept out of sight. If you plan to own a live blade for demonstrations or cutting events, check local regulations and ensure you have a clear lawful reason for possession. When in doubt, consult a qualified instructor or legal source before making a purchase.
Finding the best price is about more than the sticker—look for sites that compare multiple retailers so you can see prices, shipping, and return conditions side-by-side. Seasonal sales, bundle deals (weapon plus protective gear), and clearance items from reputable brands can deliver huge value. Read reviews, check materials and measurements in inches and pounds, and watch for items labeled “training” vs. “display” to avoid paying for unnecessary finishes.
A comparison site acts like a shopping map: it shows you who sells a bo staff or katana, which brand has the best price, and whether there are coupon codes or promotions. That saves time and prevents impulse buying. I like to compare at least three sources for a single item—one big retailer, one specialist martial arts shop, and a comparison aggregator—to find the best combination of cost and quality.
Budget realistically. Expect to pay $20 to $50 for starter foam or plastic trainers, $40 to $150 for quality bokken or rattan sticks, and $200 or more for authentic katana and high-end display pieces. Spend more on items you’ll use every day, like a staff or bokken, and save on accessories you can upgrade later. Buying mid-range instead of the cheapest option usually pays off in longevity and safety.
Reputation matters in martial arts gear. Look for makers known for consistent materials and safety standards—brands that explicitly state material specs in inches and pounds. Specialist kendo and iaido suppliers are often best for practice swords, while Filipino martial arts communities recommend rattan makers who avoid splinter-prone wood. Customer reviews and martial arts forums are helpful resources when weighing real-world durability.
Weapons training benefits from conditioning and flexibility work. Strengthening your wrists, shoulders, and core can make a 6-foot bo staff feel much lighter and improve your control. Consider pairing weapons practice with resistance training, agility drills, and joint mobility work to reduce fatigue and injury risk. It’s a bit like upgrading the chassis of a car so the engine performs better—your body supports better technique when it's tuned up.
Choosing martial arts weapons is an exercise in balancing safety, purpose, and budget. Whether you’re buying a foam trainer to get started or investing in a handcrafted display piece, know your measurements in inches and your weights in pounds, check materials, and prioritize safety gear. Use comparison tools to find discounts and read reviews before buying. A thoughtful purchase today will accelerate your training and keep you practicing safely for years to come.
