How do I measure my tree to choose the correct skirt size?

Measure the widest part of your tree’s branches across in inches to get the diameter. Choose a skirt diameter that matches or extends 6 to 12 inches beyond that width for balanced coverage. Don’t forget to measure the base stand if you want full concealment.

Can I machine wash a velvet or faux fur tree skirt?

Most velvet and faux fur skirts should be spot-cleaned or dry-cleaned rather than machine-washed to maintain texture and pile. Always check the care label: some synthetic faux furs tolerate gentle machine cycles, but air drying and low-heat treatments are safest.

What size skirt should I buy for a 7-foot tree?

For a 7-foot tree, which typically has a broad spread, look for a skirt between 48 and 60 inches in diameter. If your tree has particularly wide branches or you want dramatic overhang, choose 60 inches or larger.

Are tree skirts with embellishments like sequins or beads practical for homes with pets?

Embellished skirts can look stunning but may attract pets or fray with frequent handling. If you have curious pets, consider a durable fabric like quilted cotton or a simpler velvet finish that’s easier to clean and less likely to be chewed or snagged.

What are easy DIY options if I want a budget-friendly tree skirt?

Repurpose a round blanket, tablecloth, or small rug by cutting a center hole and adding a slit to slip it around the trunk. Use fabric glue, trims, or iron-on appliqués to decorate without sewing. Fleece blankets and felt are especially user-friendly for no-sew projects.

Ultimate Guide to Christmas Tree Skirts: Stylish Picks, Sizing Tips & Care

Why a Christmas Tree Skirt Makes a Big Difference

If you think a tree skirt is just a decorative afterthought, think again. A well-chosen skirt is the frame around your holiday centerpiece — it hides the unsightly tree stand, catches stray needles, protects your floor, and ties your theme together like the finishing stroke of a painting. Whether your style runs modern minimal, rustic farmhouse, or plush luxury, the right skirt sets the mood and anchors all the ornaments and gifts beneath the tree. Think of it as the rug in a living room: it defines the space and pulls all the colors and textures into one cozy composition.

Featured Pick: Lene Bjerre Cristivia Tree Rug — About Ø43 in, White-Multi

One standout option to consider is the Lene Bjerre Cristivia tree rug, a round skirt roughly 43 inches across. Its white-multi palette and elegant design work beautifully with neutral trees or vivid colored decorations, offering a soft, refined base that doesn’t compete with your ornaments. Lene Bjerre is known for home decor that blends timeless Scandinavian aesthetics with a contemporary touch, and this piece is no exception. If you’re looking for something that reads both premium and approachable — a skirt that elevates the overall look without shouting — this kind of rug-style skirt is a smart choice.

Popular Materials and What They Mean for Your Home

Material is one of the biggest decisions when choosing a tree skirt. It affects how your tree looks, how easy the skirt is to clean, and whether it feels cozy or formal. From lush faux fur that adds a wintery vibe to classic tartan wool that brings heritage charm, each fabric has pros and cons. Match the material to your lifestyle: families with pets and kids might prefer something durable and washable, while those aiming for a luxe, photo-ready setup may opt for velvet or embellished cotton.

Velvet and Velour: Luxurious Visual Depth

Velvet or velour skirts add depth and richness to holiday decor. They reflect light subtly, making ornaments pop, and their soft touch invites you to sit nearby and enjoy the scene. Velvet is slightly more delicate — spot-clean or dry-clean recommended — but the payoff in visual warmth can be worth the extra care.

Faux Fur: Winter Wonderland, Minus the Chill

Faux fur skirts are the quick shortcut to a cozy, Scandinavian holiday look. They mimic a blanket of fresh snow and pair brilliantly with warm white lights. Faux fur is also forgiving with minor spills and can often be spot cleaned; however, it may attract pet hair and need occasional brushing to keep it fluffy.

Quilted and Cotton: Practical and Washable

Quilted cotton or linen skirts are a practical pick for busy households. They’re often machine-washable, relatively inexpensive, and available in printed patterns like plaid or holiday motifs. While less dramatic than velvet or fur, cotton options are versatile and easy to store.

Wool and Natural Fibers: Classic and Durable

Wool or felt tree skirts bring a handcrafted feel and strong durability. They resist wrinkling and can be needle-felted or embroidered for unique detail. Wool is warmer and more robust than cotton but may require specialty cleaning if stained.

How to Choose the Right Size — A Simple Measuring Guide

Choosing the correct diameter for a tree skirt is simpler than it seems, and a little measuring goes a long way. Start by measuring the widest part of the tree’s branches across — that gives you the visual footprint. Most tree skirts are measured across the diameter when laid flat. A skirt too small will look swallowed; a skirt too large can overwhelm. Aim for balance, and don’t be afraid to let a skirt peek out 6 to 12 inches beyond the branch tips for a polished look.

Measure Your Tree Base and Branch Spread

First, measure the diameter of the tree’s widest branches in inches. Then measure the base stand if you want full coverage. If your tree is 5 feet tall with a medium spread, a skirt between 36 and 48 inches in diameter usually fits well. Taller, broader trees often look best with 60 inches or larger skirts. Always measure in inches or feet so you get a true sense of scale and avoid surprises when you lay the skirt down.

Common Size Ranges to Consider

Here are common size guidelines to keep handy: for small tabletop trees choose 12 to 24 inches; for compact living-room trees go with 24 to 36 inches; medium trees look great with 36 to 48 inches; large family trees often need 48 to 60 inches or more. If you prefer a very dramatic base, add 6 to 12 inches to these ranges for extra overhang.

Styling Tips: Make Your Skirt Work With Your Decor

Think of the tree skirt as the anchor rather than an afterthought. It should complement — not compete with — the tree and the rest of the room. Play with color balance, texture contrast, and layering to create a look that feels intentional. Want a cozy hygge vibe? Pair a faux fur skirt with warm white lights and wooden ornaments. After a modern glam look? Choose a sleek velvet skirt in a deep jewel tone with metallic accents.

Color Coordination: Match or Contrast?

Color choices depend on your overall palette. Neutral skirts like cream, gray, or soft white are versatile and let the tree ornaments take center stage. If your tree’s dominant tones are metallics or bold colors, a muted skirt will ground the look. On the flip side, a patterned tartan or deep red skirt can provide festive contrast, especially with a green tree and simple ornaments.

Layering and Texture: More Isn’t Too Much

Layering textures creates depth. For instance, place a thin cable-knit tree collar over a wider quilted skirt for a layered, tactile look. You can also place a small decorative tray or fabric runner partially over the skirt to highlight a gift display or a train of string lights. Don’t be afraid to mix smooth, shiny ornaments with matte and fuzzy textures — it keeps the eye moving and the scene cozy.

Care and Maintenance: Keep Your Skirt Looking Fresh Year After Year

Holiday pieces can last decades if you treat them right. Care varies by material: faux fur and velvet often need gentle handling, while cotton and quilted fabrics tolerate machine washing. Check label instructions, but when in doubt, spot-clean stains promptly with mild detergent and cool water. Avoid high heat when drying; air drying preserves shape and pile.

Cleaning Tips for Common Materials

For velvet, spot-clean stains and use a fabric brush to restore nap. Faux fur can often be spot-cleaned and fluffed with a low-heat blow dryer or by gently shaking outdoors. Quilted cotton skirts may be machine-washed on a cold gentle cycle in a mesh bag to preserve trim. Wool skirts should be treated with care — hand wash or dry clean according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Storage Advice to Avoid Wrinkles and Damage

Store skirts flat when possible, rolled with acid-free tissue paper to prevent creasing, or gently folded with padding placed at folds to avoid permanent creases. Keep them in breathable storage bags or plastic bins in a cool, dry place to guard against moisture and pests. Placing a small lavender sachet helps freshen linens without strong chemicals.

Top Brands and Alternatives to Explore

If you’re comparing options, consider a mix of well-known home brands and handmade artisans. Brands like Lene Bjerre, Pottery Barn, West Elm, and department retailers often offer a range from classic to contemporary. If you prefer unique, handcrafted options, check artisan marketplaces for embroidered, appliqué, or personalized tree skirts. Comparison sites can be helpful for spotting trends and finding the best prices across multiple sellers; just remember to check the product details and care instructions carefully.

Budget-Friendly vs. Investment Pieces — What to Buy?

Deciding between a budget-friendly skirt and an investment piece comes down to frequency and sentiment. If you redecorate annually or have pets and kids, a washable, less expensive option may be the wisest choice. If this tree skirt will be a family heirloom or the focal point of your seasonal photos for years, investing in a high-quality velvet or embroidered wool piece makes sense. Both approaches can be stylish — it’s about matching the product to your lifestyle and how you plan to use it.

Affordable Options That Still Look Great

If you’re working within a tighter budget, look for quilted cotton or polyester blends that mimic higher-end fabrics. Seasonal sales and comparison tools can help you land a patterned skirt that looks premium without the premium price tag. These options are often machine-washable and more forgiving for everyday family life.

Investment Pieces Worth the Extra Spend

High-quality velvet, hand-embroidered, or richly detailed skirts are worth the extra spend if you value longevity and craftsmanship. These pieces elevate the entire holiday setup and can serve as a decorative item for years. Look for neat stitching, quality lining, and durable closures like hidden snaps or a centered slit for easy placement around the trunk.

DIY and Creative Alternatives: Make It Personal

Want something truly unique? DIY tree skirts can be simple, affordable, and meaningful. Reuse an old blanket or repurpose a round rug with a central cut and a slit to slip around the base. With a little fabric glue, trims, or iron-on motifs, you can customize colors and add initials for a personal touch. No-sew options using fabric glue or iron-on appliqués make this craft accessible for beginners.

No-Sew Ideas That Deliver Big Impact

Use a round fleece blanket and add a ribbon tie or festive pom-poms around the edge — no sewing required. Felt cutouts glued to a plain skirt can create instant holiday patterns like stars, trees, or snowflakes. These approaches are fast, kid-friendly, and easily changed each year.

Repurposing Household Items for a Budget Skirt

Old quilts, tablecloths, or oversized scarves can be transformed into charming tree skirts with minimal modifications. Fold and secure edges with fabric tape or a running stitch, add a slit for the base, and decorate with buttons or trims for a cozy, upcycled look that tells a story in your holiday décor.

Where to Compare and Shop Smart

Comparing options across sellers helps you find the best materials, sizes, and styling at a price that fits your budget. Use comparison sites to read multiple product descriptions and spot differences in size and care instructions before you buy. Remember to verify dimensions in inches and check returnable conditions if you’re matching to a specific tree size or color scheme. Comparison sites can reveal trends and provide quick side-by-side comparisons so you can make an informed choice without hopping from store to store.

Conclusion

Choosing a Christmas tree skirt is a small decision with a surprisingly large visual payoff. From the elegant silhouette of a 43-inch Lene Bjerre-style rug to a cozy faux fur or a practical quilted cotton option, the right skirt ties your holiday look together while protecting surfaces and creating a welcoming base for gifts. Measure your tree in inches, match materials to your lifestyle, and don’t be afraid to layer textures for depth. Whether you buy new, shop smart through comparison tools, or craft a one-of-a-kind DIY piece, a thoughtfully selected tree skirt will make your holiday setup feel finished, festive, and uniquely yours.
