Rivets FAQs
How do I convert rivet sizes to the right drill bit in inches?
Match the hole diameter to the rivet body diameter in inches. For example, use a drill bit close to 0.124" for a 0.124" rivet and about 0.189" for a 0.189" rivet. If in doubt, start with a slightly smaller bit and test—too large a hole yields a loose fit.
Can I use aluminium rivets on steel panels?
You can, but be mindful of galvanic corrosion in moist environments. For outdoor or marine use, either isolate the metals with non-conductive washers or choose compatible metals, such as stainless steel rivets, to avoid long-term corrosion issues.
What rivet diameter is best for attaching metal brackets?
For brackets that see load or vibration, larger diameters like 0.189" are a better choice because they offer superior shear resistance and clamping force. Smaller diameters are fine for decorative or low-load brackets.
How many rivets should I keep in a basic home kit?
A basic kit could include two boxes each of small and medium rivets (50 per box) and one box of larger rivets (40 per box), plus a hand riveter and appropriate drill bits. That gives you enough for multiple repair jobs without overstocking.
Are mandrels reusable once they snap?
No—mandrels are designed to break off during installation to form a secure bulbed end. They’re not reusable, but they’re inexpensive and come included in standard rivets.
