What size rug pad should I buy relative to my rug?

Pick a pad that is 1 to 2 inches smaller on all sides than your rug to prevent the pad from showing and to avoid trip hazards. If you have a custom rug, buy a slightly larger pad and trim it carefully to fit.

Are rubber rug pads safe for hardwood floors?

Many rubber pads are safe, but only if they are explicitly labeled “non-marking” or “non-staining.” Otherwise, some rubber or PVC pads can discolor delicate wood finishes. Consider a hybrid pad (felt top with rubber backing) to get grip without risking stains.

How do I clean a rug pad if it gets dirty?

Most rubber and hybrid pads can be wiped with mild soap and water. Felt pads can be shaken out, vacuumed, or spot cleaned and should be left to air dry completely before replacing under the rug to prevent mildew.

Can I use a rug pad under a rug with a latex backing?

Yes—but choose a non-abrasive pad that won’t react with the rug’s existing backing. A thin felt or hybrid pad often works well without disrupting the rug’s structure. Test a small corner first if you’re unsure.

Do rug pads affect door clearance?

They can, especially thicker pads. Choose a low-profile pad for areas with doors that swing over the rug or trim the pad near doorways so doors open freely. Measure door clearances in inches before finalizing your pad thickness.

Best Rug Pads for Slipping-Free Floors: A Buyer’s Guide to Top Anti-Slip Underlays (Sizes Shown in Inches)

Why a rug pad is the secret weapon in every home

If you’ve ever tripped over the corner of a rug or watched a runner slide across your hardwood like a penguin on ice, you know the value of a good rug pad. Rug pads provide grip, cushion, and protection for both the rug and the floor beneath. They extend rug life, reduce wear, and can even improve room acoustics. Think of a rug pad as the unsung hero that makes a rug feel anchored, comfortable, and safe.

Top anti-slip underlays featured

There are several reliable underlays on the market, but three names pop up again and again for performance and value: Scandi Essentials’ Bergavik anti-slip mat, Kateha anti-slip rug underlay, and Linie Design’s Prima Stop anti-slip underlay. Each comes in multiple sizes, so whether you’ve got a small accent rug or a grand living-room centerpiece, there’s an option that fits. Below we’ll walk through the strengths of each product and which spaces they’re best for.

Scandi Essentials Bergavik Anti Slip Mat — small and versatile (47 x 71 in)

The Bergavik in the 47 x 71 inch size is perfect for smaller rooms, bedrooms, or under dining chairs. It offers a thin but effective grip that prevents minor shifting without raising the rug’s pile too much. If you prefer a minimalist look where the underlay shouldn’t be noticed, this size and profile deliver the security you want with a low visual footprint.

Scandi Essentials Bergavik Anti Slip Mat — runner friendly (31 x 98 in)

Runners need a special kind of anchoring. The 31 x 98 inch Bergavik is built for hallways and narrow kitchens; it keeps long, thin rugs from bunching or curling at the edges. It’s thin enough to allow doors to open freely while providing enough friction to keep feet from catching on folds.

Scandi Essentials Bergavik Anti Slip Mat — medium and large options (63 x 93 in and 87 x 126 in)

For medium to large rugs, the 63 x 93 inch and 87 x 126 inch Bergavik pads provide broad coverage and uniform grip. Use these under coffee-table rugs in living areas to prevent sliding and protect hardwood from heavy foot traffic. They’re also great under patterned rugs that might otherwise move and distort the look of a room.

Scandi Essentials Bergavik Anti Slip Mat — extra-large (75 x 114 in and 94 x 134 in)

When you need underlay for the largest rugs—think open-plan living or large dining areas—these sizes offer maximum stability. They’re suitable for rugs placed under furniture like sofas and dining tables, ensuring the rug stays put even when chairs are moved and feet shuffle. The larger Bergavik sizes are also useful for layering: place a full-size pad under a rug and a smaller pad under runners to create consistent traction across a space.

Kateha Anti-slip Rug Underlay — trusted for heavy rugs

Kateha’s anti-slip underlays are designed for durability and strong grip, making them a favorite for high-traffic areas and heavier rugs. They come in sizes that match common rug dimensions and are engineered to hold even thick, heavy rugs motionless. If you have an ornate wool rug or a large rug with lots of texture, a Kateha underlay can prevent slippage without adding bulk.

Kateha 63 x 91 in — the all-round performer

The 63 x 91 inch Kateha underlay hits the sweet spot for many living rooms and bedrooms. It balances thickness with traction and doesn’t interfere with sofa legs or door clearances. Use it under area rugs that receive steady foot traffic—it helps maintain rug shape and reduces wear on corners and edges.

Kateha 75 x 114 in and 94 x 134 in — big rugs, big grip

For large open-plan spaces, the 75 x 114 inch and 94 x 134 inch sizes deliver consistent hold across the entire rug. These sizes are ideal under rugs that anchor seating groups or define zones within a larger room. They’re also robust enough to handle the extra weight of furniture without compressing out of shape.

Linie Design Prima Stop Anti-slip Underlay — clean look with white finish

Linie Design’s Prima Stop is known for a neat, subtle finish—often available in white—so it blends nicely under lighter rugs or when the rug edge shows. The underlay provides a good balance of slip resistance and cushion while remaining unobtrusive. If your décor includes pale or vintage rugs and you worry about dark underlays showing through, a white underlay like this helps maintain a clean aesthetic.

Prima Stop 24 x 47 in and 75 x 114 in — options for various setups

The smaller 24 x 47 inch Prima Stop is great for small area rugs or by the bedside, while the 75 x 114 inch covers large living spaces. The consistent surface texture gives uniform grip, and the lighter color makes it a solid choice under rugs where tassels or transparent patterns might reveal the underlay edge.

How to choose the right rug pad material

Rug pads come in several materials—rubber, felt, or hybrid rubber-felt. Rubber and vinyl pads deliver exceptional non-slip performance but can sometimes discolor delicate floors; look for “non-marking” labels. Felt pads provide cushioning and sound absorption, and are often used under heavy rugs to protect hardwood from indentations. Hybrid pads combine a felt layer for cushioning and a rubberized back for grip. Match the material to your primary goal: grip, cushioning, or floor protection.

When to choose rubber-based underlays

Choose rubber when slip prevention is the main priority, especially on smooth surfaces like hardwood, tile, or laminate. Rubber grips the floor strongly and prevents the rug from shifting, which is essential on glossy or slippery surfaces. However, ensure the pad is labeled non-staining if you have delicate flooring.

When felt or hybrid pads are better

If you want comfort underfoot or need to protect softer wood from chair legs and furniture, felt or hybrid pads are better. Felt adds loft that increases cushioning and reduces wear; hybrid pads offer the best of both worlds with rubber traction on the bottom and felt on top for protection and comfort.

Size matters: measuring and trimming tips

Picking the right underlay size requires simple measuring. Place your rug down where it will live, measure the rug’s length and width in inches, and choose an underlay slightly smaller than the rug—typically 1 to 2 inches shorter on all sides. This prevents the pad from peeking out and avoids tripping hazards. Many underlays are easy to trim with scissors to achieve a perfect fit.

Runners and door clearance

For hallway runners, measure the runner length and width and ensure the pad won’t interfere with doors. Leave a small gap around the rug edges for a neat border and to avoid pinching door bottoms. If a door rubs, trim the pad thinner near the threshold rather than trimming under the rug itself.

Installation and maintenance: quick how-to

Installing a rug pad is straightforward: clean the floor, position the pad, and place the rug on top. For larger pads, work from one end to the other to avoid wrinkles. If the pad needs trimming, use sharp scissors and make small cuts—better to trim a bit at a time than over-cut. For maintenance, vacuum rugs as usual; most pads are machine washable or can be hand-washed, but always check product care instructions. Rotate rugs periodically to distribute wear evenly.

Cleaning tough spots

If spills occur, lift the rug and clean both the rug and the pad so moisture doesn’t get trapped. Rubber pads can usually be wiped down with mild soap and water. Felt pads may take longer to dry; remove them to dry completely before re-laying to avoid mildew or odors.

Which underlay is best for pets and kids?

Homes with pets and kids need stability and easy cleaning. Rubber or hybrid pads that are non-marking and moisture-resistant are the best bet. They stop rugs from turning into slip-and-slide hazards and provide a cushioned surface that’s gentler on knees and paws. Also look for underlays that are odor-resistant and easy to lift for spot cleaning.

Alternative accessories to pair with underlays

Besides underlays, consider corner rug grippers, double-sided tape for extra security, and felt pads for furniture legs. Corner grippers are small and unobtrusive, perfect for rugs that shift at the edges. Double-sided rug tape can provide added peace of mind in high-traffic areas, but compare that to a full underlay to avoid floor damage. Pairing felt blocks under table legs reduces scrape marks and complements the protection a pad gives the rug itself.

Comparing prices and where to look

Prices vary by brand, size, and material. The easiest way to find a good deal is to compare multiple retailers and comparison sites that list current offers. Comparison platforms let you filter by size, material, and price so you can quickly find the best match for your rug and budget. If you prefer a hands-on feel, local rug shops often offer samples or guidance to match a pad to your floor type.

Final buying checklist

Before you click “buy,” run through this quick checklist: measure your rug in inches, decide whether grip or cushion is priority, check that the underlay is labeled non-staining if you have hardwood, choose a size slightly smaller than the rug, and confirm trimability or exact size availability. A little prep goes a long way toward avoiding common mistakes like visible edges or floor discoloration.

Quick product match guide

Here’s a fast way to choose among the products discussed: choose Scandi Essentials Bergavik for thin, low-profile grip that suits modern minimalist rugs and runners; pick Kateha for heavy-duty grip under thick or antique rugs that shouldn’t move; and opt for Linie Design Prima Stop if you want a cleaner, lighter-colored pad that blends under pale or translucent rugs. Mix and match sizes—small bedside rug pads, runner sizes for hallways, and large pads for living-room rugs—to create a consistent feel throughout the house.

Eco and safety considerations

Check product materials for eco-friendly labeling if sustainability matters to you. Natural rubber options or recyclable pads are available. Also be mindful of flame-retardant treatments and whether the pad emits any noticeable odor when new—if it does, allow it to air out before use. For homes with small children, ensure the pad doesn’t have loose edges or components that could be a choking hazard.

Where to go from here

Now that you know the benefits and have seen how sizes like 24 x 47 in, 31 x 98 in, 47 x 71 in, 63 x 91 in, 63 x 93 in, 75 x 114 in, 87 x 126 in, and 94 x 134 in map to common rug dimensions, you’re ready to pick the right underlay. Measure, match the material to your floor and lifestyle, and use trims or supplemental grippers when needed. If you want to scout current prices and compare sellers, use reputable comparison sites (including comparison platforms that aggregate many retailers) to find the best value and available sizes.

With the right rug pad, your rugs will stay put, look better longer, and make your home safer and more comfortable. Ready to give your rug the foundation it deserves?
